  • Widgeon images from last week

Thanks for your support on my last posting. I made a determined effort to get out and use the camera on short expeditions last week. I thought I might share some of the images with you.

Widgeon (also known as Wigeon) are attracted to the shoreline when the tide starts to recede, to feed on the seaweed exposed by the falling tide.

A male flies in to join the flock already here.

Love the Male in No4 and the rest are great too.
Looked in your gallery for them to see the kit you used but not there.
Would be interested how you got the in flight ones as mine never come out any good.

Thank you both for your kind comments.

I use the Sigma 50-500 (Bigma) with the E5 body. All these were shot Aperture priority (f10) with -1/3 stop on exposure. I find that f10 is ideal for the Bigma and has the added advantage that the dof is quite deep even for full frame shots at a fl of 500mm.This is very important if you are capturing a large bird at a short focal distance. Shutter speed is important to get right and I will increase the ISO to about 800 (or more) if I have to. The exposure compensation I use is to protect the highlight detail. I know the E5 should be capable of shooting w/o compensation but I have learnt not to rely on this completely particularly where highlight and shadow detail are involved in a single image. The camera metering can get the exposure wrong.

        Hope this helps.
