  • Baby it's cold outside ...

... but it was mixed fortunes on the canal. Areas which were out of the sun and away from the water flow caused by the locks remained frozen over but other parts took on a very different look with the water flowing freely, although overall the temperature remained cool to say the least. In fact last night the temperature in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, which is the town we lived in a few years ago and which is in the neighbouring county but only five miles from where we live now, dropped to minus 11.1 degrees C.

    1. Narrow boats going nowhere. These boats are moored just outside a marina and just above the lock, so not benefitting from the movement of the water -

    2. Walking further on and in an adjoining field we came across this heron looking rather forlorn. Looks like he might have forgotten why he went into the field in the first place - probably had mousing on his mind originally -

    3. A little nearer to home, the canal had benefitted from direct sun for most of the day and these ducks had found a more familiar environment -

    4. Finally, before getting back to the comfort of the house, on 'our stretch', this moorhen looked less than pleased about having to slide about on the ice.

All taken with E-30, 70-300mm lens.

    Regards,
    Ann1e

A lovely set! It is nice to see the sunlight. All my shots have been very Gray lately

I like the canals and rivers there is always something to photograph.

The 70 - 300mm is next on my list. I was so close to getting one and I was tempted with a 14 - 54mm but I will add one ready for the spring. I loved it when I hired it for the weekend.

Love the canals... and always your interesting shots... the wind here in the last few days could cut you in half, but then i'm only 8 miles from the sea...

The Heron looks like he has frost on his beak!!

Thanks for looking and commenting on my post. We love walking the canal - as you say there is always something to photograph, although today's walk brought forth the grey tones you mention. No sun today, just a hint of fog!

Couldn't be without my 70-300mm now, although it certainly performs very much better in good light. Not a lens to use to best advantage in today's conditions!

          Thank you for your comments.

We too have suffered a bitter wind in the last few days -can't remember when I last felt so cold out and about. I know how it is in East Anglia - we have friends in Norfolk whom we visit quite often and when the wind comes in from the north or east there is nothing to break its path and boy is it cold. You do, however, like them, have the advantage of being so close to the coast - here in Hertfordshire we are almost as far away as we could be - and that is my main regret in being located here.

Well the snow well and truly arrived last night, along with my 14-54 mk1 which I purchased on Friday, so went out this morning.. but nothing of note to shoot..but can't wait to get out and about with it..

I am seriously considering a 70-300 in fact I have an offer on the table for one at the moment waiting to hear.

            Cheers

I like that heron shot a lot, and the frozen river is awesome.
