I can remember my Uncles having a heated discussion on how outrageous it was that petrol had gone up to half a crown a gallon. That must have been in approximately 1949, my parents did not have a car at that time.
Indeed I do remember, Bob. I was probably 10 yrs old around the time of the end of WWII, my dad used to fill up his old Essex Super6 at the Shell bowser ... memories !

At the moment Bob ! Soon what will the USA do for Oil/diesel & Petrol ? they are falling out with all the Middle East countries ... as fighting over the fuel oil of the future ! With their gaz guzzler ve-hicles they will be stuffed !

To be honest it doesn't get you very far, but with that stuff on pump who wants to go anywhere anyway?
