May I recommend Presteigne in Mid Wales?
It's a small but perfectly formed town, quirky and odd and determined to stick in 1965 for as long as possible. They have quite an array of thriving small shops. This is because, at the moment, they have no Tesco or Asda nearby to suck the life out of the town.
Here the pace of life is slower, and it is entirely normal to stop your van in the High Street, thereby halting the traffic completely, while you load a new washing machine into it. No-one really minds.
Excellent.
Still what's the point of telling you all this if I didn't bring back some pictures eh ...
So. Here we are at the Kings Head Bookshop. 45 The High Street.

The lights are on, the door is open, it smells wonderfully of old books, but there's no-one home.
Old books everywhere, a couple of bare lightbulbs. No owner to be seen.

I suppose I could ring the bell but no-one would come:

Aha. It's an Honesty Bookshop. Leave your money at the shop down the road opposite the Post office.
Lovely.
Just my sort of place.
Pete
PS. If this is all a little too formal for your tastes, then there's always the Other Bookshop:
