Thought I'd try my hand at some still life shots, so here is the best of the group. Quite pleased with the result but I think I could improve it with some detail in the background; a few folds and creases in the cloth maybe.



Taken with an E-30, 14-35 f/2.0 lens and two FL-50Rs. One flash was positioned top left as fill flash, manual, 1/64th power with snoot. The other flash lower right as main flash, manual, 1/16th power with diffuser.

I would suggest, 1. that instead of wasting beautiful blooms, cut the stems and use/arrange them to "fill in the gaps" you are viewing - EVEN LAYING A BLOOM "FULL FRONTAL" to the camera thro' the rest of the blooms ... ; 2. consider taking a shot from above - sometimes its nice to "float the blooms with virtually, no stems, in a large bowl of water - again fill the gaps and have some higher/lower. 3. sometimes a pieces of beautiful white net curtain can set off the Roses better than black. I only suggest the aforementioned, because I LURVE ROSES and take hundreds of shots of Roses ... I am unable to find my best shots here (they are on other PC in Den )

but here ... is an example of how BRIGHT white net throws the light, to, I believe illuminate the Blooms ! The RAW shots are awesome in detaila ... With a Macro lens you end up with the most amazing detailed blooms ! to cut out and drop into anywhere in Photoshop etal ... ps I keep my Roses in the Fridge so I get a few days photographing them !

Thanks Chevvy, I had in mind exactly what you suggest. There was an article in a recent camera magazine that inspired me. This was my first attempt, so lots of experimenting to do.

BTW, the flowers aren't real. Ebay props

The possibilities are only limited by one's imagination Chevvy. Those flowers are great for practising with, they can be bent into shape when arranging and you aren't limited to a limited life span.

One tip. Don't buy them immediately, put in a bid at the lowest price. You won't get any other bidders as the seller has loads up for auction, so you'll get them much cheaper than the buy-it-now price.

ps I use a mix of water + glycerin to "spra on" globules ... the Gylcerin is thick and holds the water globules for light refraction ! GR8 ! 10:1 or 5:1 dilution
