  • In the twinkle of an eye.

Very close to our local bird hide is a peanut feeder under some trees which attracts a small number of common birds. On this morning's visit the light was so poor that I thought I would try on-board flash. Surprisingly, although the birds twitched a little they carried on feeding, thereby dismissing my fear that using the flash would amount to undue disturbance. Just 4 metres away.

    1. The usual culprit at a feeder, a Blue Tit:

    2. Another regular, the Great Tit:

    Male Chaffinch:

    Adult male Great Spotted Woodpecker:

A hen Pheasant in the grass close to the feeder:

Interestingly most display not only the catchlight on the cornea but also one on the retina.

    Not bad at all...

The pictures with a free background are virtually free from the shadow left by the flash (Great Tid, Chaffinch). The flash is very little intrusive on the Pheasant, looks very natural.

These are lovely David. What a great collection to get at the feeder.
I particularly like the colours in the chaffinch.
      The flash worked well.
