  • Walk around West Wycombe Church.

West Wycombe Hill, above West Wycombe Village, is surmounted by an Iron Age hill fort, which shares space with a largely-13th century church. The church is topped with an enormous "Golden Ball", large enough to hold 6 people. It was created by Sir Francis Dashwood. The interior of the church is remarkable; it was created to emulate an Egyptian temple with Corinthian columns, marble floors, and richly decorated ceilings and walls.

The 18th century Church of St. Lawrence, with its golden ball on the top of the hill, is a well-known landmark, visible for many miles due its hilltop location, visually dominating the village. The church was remodelled by Sir Francis Dashwood inside and out. The hill is known as 'West Wycombe Hill' and was an Iron Age hill fort. Also situated on the hill is the Dashwood Mausoleum, inspired by the Colosseum in Rome.

Some of the photos not that good any comments or tips welcome

It certainly looks an interesting place. The light was a bit harsh and comming from the wrong direction for the main shot of the church, it might have been better to wait for the sun to move round to illuminate the side of the building as well as the front. Also, I would have waited until no people were in the frame, or composed it so they were not cut in half. It's great that you isolated some of the details, like the top of the tower with that enormous golden ball. I'd certainly like to see more pictures of the church, the interior too.

You forgot to mention the cave at the foot of the hill, where Dashwood's 'Hellfire Club' met:

One of the little challenges of English church photography is that the North side is very difficult to photograph - except around midday in high summer, thankfully most church architects place the most interesting bits on the south side.

Be nice to see some more shots of what looks to be an 18'th century structure with an interesting history.

Yes i did forget to mention the Hellfire caves at the foot of the hill.
Next time i have a walk around the church i will see it i can time it when the church is open, and try to get up to the top by the ball and get some shots looking down.

I've done that, but ISTRC that whilst the view is 'big', it's not particularly photogenic (but maybe your results will show me otherwise!).

While you're there, look up at the ball. If like me you have a tendency to vertigo, you'll find the prospect of a climb to it pretty scary (though it's closed anyway).

Nice shots, they brought back a few memories from a walk we did a few years ago

I hope you don't mind, here are a couple I took near dusk December 2008, each are HDR exposure fusion from RAW.
