  • Southwold Moments

Well, here we are in excellent Southwold. Our second visit, and what a nice little place it is.

Firstly I would like to point out all my work is original, and never derivative at all: So here is my first offering..

See, you've never seen a shot like that before, eh.. ;-)

Next. A miserable bunch of twichers. Goodness me, I hope a click of photographers are more friendly that this lot were...

Now, some idea of the apcalyptic weather we had at the weekend.. This thing hung around silent and stationary for a while, so we went home. It the turned into a thunderstorm, but we were snug indoors.

Apologies for the indifferent quality of the PP. I am stuck with my laptop, no CS3, no mouse and a very weak wi-fi link out here in the wilds :-)

Pete I am fairly sure I have seen that first shot posted on here by someone else recently? Maybe Shirley or Caroline Charty ?

Your Twitchers look very instense I hope you did not make any noise, to disturb them or their subjects?

As for weather - no different down South !

Yes, I'm afraid it's one of Shirley's subjects...

Twitchers. Well I tried to strike up a conversation with them, but they were all busy staring far out to sea at, well, nothing as far as I could see...

Here's another contre-jour shot from the pier, I quite liked the shadows of the legs on the water..

You could always get a kite and start flying it on the beach? it could change their concentration for a second:-) I always remember Southwold for the smell from the brewery. Its a great area though.

Another day, and competely different weather.

Here we are in Aldeburgh, just down from the coast from Southwold and just as nice :-)

It is another of the east coast towns that has lost a lot of it's real estate to the North sea.
Right on the beach we found this weird mixture of house and windmill that I suspect was well inland once.

And yet further down the each is this amazing Martello Tower. You can rent it for the week, and we got talking to a couple who have it at present.
Apparently, with 8 feet thich walls, it's like an anti-Tardis. Much smaller on the inside than on the outside...

Hehe, I guess we've all copied the work of the Grand Masters at some point in our photographic careers.

Those twitchers look like they've just seen a corncrake but missed a dodo!

Moving inland we paid a visit to Fressingfield for family reasons. The church there boasts some of the best preserved carved pews around. These date from 1470.

Fourteen Seventy! The mind boggles. All those years, all those hands polishing the wood as they pass.

Unfortunately, the Puritans called by and sliced off the faces of most of the carvings..

                Finally... One of these:

                  Re: Southwold Moments

Actually, an Aldeburgh moment. Looming over the fishing boats and about three miles away, is Sizewell B and the rectangular Sizewell A buildings.

It's only in retrospect that I put together the combination of crab and fish sales direct from the fishermen on the beach with large local Nuclear Power Station that uses sea water for cooling...

"How do I cook this crab?"
"Well, actually, you don't need to..."

                        Re: Southwold Moments

Today we came across another outdoor hobby: A group of artists on a four day painting course.
It was a touch breezy and there were easels going everywhere: An Easel is just like a tripod but with a sail on the top.

Perhaps painting tables are a better idea after all..

Then we caught the Walberswick ferry, rowed by the petite but strong Dani Church since she took over the role from her Father.
She has a book about the history of the ferry, apparently it's been going 800 years...

(Sorry this shot isn't straight, I didn't take my Easel with me..)

and finally, if this has all got too much:
