  • White-faced Heron Chicks

One for we bird-lovers. For the past 3 years a pair of Herons have been returning to the nest in the gum tree in our yard and this year we have two chicks, possibly three. We spend hours watching their progress.
They are up very high - this taken with the 70-300mm.

Its that time of year again when new life awakens the Spring (or have I got that the wrong way around!). Nice shot there, Lyn - though you must tell the parents to build their nest in a less busy part of the tree in future.

Sometimes you just have to take what you get! Thanks for looking Mark.

Nice shots of ugly chicks ! I think the Herons walking or stalking along a waters edge are elegant but their chicks are like Ostrich/ugly !

Good shots at that fl Lyn

Only their mother could love them Chevvy! It is great to have them so close to us though.

That's a great shot, Lyn - do you know how old they are (or were when the pic was taken)?

We see many heron on the banks of our local canal but have never seen any young in their nest - the juveniles we do see are almost fully grown and reasonably elegant looking. So many bird species look somewhat unappealing in the early weeks!

                Regards,
                Ann1e

                  Hi Ann1e
I would only be guessing at how old they are. My bird book says they fledge at 8-9 weeks and I think these don't look quite ready for that, so I reckon they may be about 5-6 weeks. The parents are so fussy with the nest building and although it looks messy, it is quite deep. As this is the 3rd year the nest has been renovated they seem like part of the family and we look for the parent's change of feeding shifts everyday. I will try and post updates as they grow
