Just been trying to get some of these in the garden...I WAS bored as well...waiting for the time to go to work.
Looking at the back of my 520 - it looks like you had more success.

I suspect the 2x converter and the OMZ's having to be nearly wide open contributed to the softness of their pics.
The little ZD 17.5-45 @ EFL 90mm seems to have coped very well in comparison.
