On the Sunday when we visited the weather was dismal with on/off rain. Loads of people there but I'm guessing some restrictions on the river washing for safety reasons. This bloke braved it.
Into the river, careful now.
Popping up on the near bank didn't give me time to zoom out.
And out, up the ramp. New boards in place, a very nice idea. I'm thinking none of them died this year, unlike 2010.
An interesting and colourful set, Ulfric. The horses in the river are great but I particularly like the caravan in No4.

What a great set ! Thanks for sharing these - Appleby is something I have always wanted to observe at ! oh and take some pics too ! Those caravans are amazing

Appleby for the last couple of years has been dismal due to Police policies of shutting the pubs and harassing the Gypsies.
This year was great, everything open, everyone happy except for the weather which was the worst for a long while.
I'm guessing next year will be especially good as people will be saying "wasn't 2011 well-managed." and those who gave it a miss will come back ... like myself.
For we Downunder it is such a treat to see such an unfamiliar sight as Gypsies as there are none in Oz. The elaborately decorated caravans are just amazing and I love the clever way you composed the first shot in such congested space.
Very well done indeed there, Ulfric.
Edit: I like this post so much that I'm back for another look. The well captured horse shots really puts the viewer right there in the water with you! A great bit of photo-journalism.

Blimey, thanks.
I was thinking about the congested space with a sprinkling of olde-worldy caravans : hopefully they might get a better arrangement to show them off now that the organisation is improving.
We're definitely going next year too.

I can't wait to see your take on this year's event, now little over 6mths hence. Meanwhile, I hope we won't have to wait that long to see more interesting events from your neck of the woods.
