  • I'm not really posing - honest!!

Another of my staggeringly slow trickle of shots from my Kenya trip.

This is a rock Hyrax who obligingly sat still for a moment, actually I'm convinced he/she was posing, to allow me to grab a shot.

Super little creatures who scuttled around rocks at impossible angles and are amazingly tame. My eldest managed to get to stroke one by simply sitting still and offering a handful of grass. As my daughter would say they are also very cute.

More Kenya shots will sluggishly follow.

    cheers

I've worked hard to be this grumpy. It hasn't been easy at times but it's worth it.

Not seen one of these before - is it a rodent or a marsupial?

Certainly not a marsupial so I assume a rodent.

Whatever there correct designation, I'm sure someone will put us right, they are ludicrously appealing.

      cheers

          Love the pose.

I don't think they do marsupials in Africa.

A swift Google says yes(ish) - more detail....

" The Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis), or Cape Hyrax, is one of the four living species of the order Hyracoidea, and the only living species in the genus Procavia. "

" They are known as dassies in South Africa, and sometimes rock rabbits. The Swahili names for them are pimbi, pelele and wibari, though the latter two names are nowadays reserved for the tree hyraxes "

If my memory serves me right, the Dassies are close realted to Elephants - so no rodents.
Was lucky enough to got some photos (with my Oly Camedia UZ-740 ) of them in RSA a while ago.

                Lovely sight!

A very amenable wee beastie sitting nicely for you

Like Falk, I seem to remember something about these wee critters being closely related to elephants too Hard to believe really
