    Re: Honister Slate Mine

Oh no, your fabulous view has reminded me of walking the Coast to Coast several years back, with rucsacs that were too heavy. Fresh into the early stages of the week, we decided to walk up from Black Sail YHA to High Stile, High Crag and Haystacks - that wasn't the worst bit though, it was going down from near your viewpoint down the really steep incline to the main Honister slate centre and then down the road into Seatoller.

Its also a reminder to me of the untimely recent death of Mark Weir who owned the Honister Slate mine and who did so much to bring tourists and employment back to this part of the Lakes. It's a beautiful area but his seemingly untiring energy helped bring a vibrancy and vitality back to these hills that was sorely needed. Beauty is nothing without people to look after it and employment to help retain a thriving local population. He could be controversial but his heart was in the right place.

    Regards
    Chris
