  • The Reaper (Not Grim) (10 photos)

    Was in Lossiemouth for a week a week ago.
    Finally got through sorting the photos.
    So here is a story;

    Looked across to the harbour one morning and saw red sails.
    Being nosey went to have a look and found this;

    The Reaper. A 1902 Fifie on her Spring Cruise from the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther. Part of the National Heritage Fleet such as Victory and Cutty Sark. But she sails.

    Loads of kids being shown round so I joined in. (I'm just a big one)

    The pictures were taken over 2 days using everything I had from the 7-14 ot the 50-200 with EC-14.

    First get on board;

    The crew (10) were having a spot of lunch before the next lot of kids.
    Note the up and down bunks behind the benches.

    This was the stove that would have provided hot food for the original crew of 8 men and a boy.

    But these days they have something far bigger. About 6 x 4 feet. Fully equipped!

    The boat has wonderful lines and does 11 knots under full sail.
    She looks good in comparison to the surrounding modern stuff.

    In the evening they gently eased her out of the inner basin;

    Winched her round the quay;

    Hoisted the Foresail;

    And quietly but beautifully sailed off to Buckie.

    A highlight of the holiday.
    If you get a chance to see her, take advantage.

    Duncan what a lovely set of shots ! I love all these old proper ships ! I have in my diary some Tall Ships visiting Southampton next week - so hope to get a few shots!

    Thanks for sharing and that Quay side setting reminds me of Anstruther and Dukes restaurant ... one day I shall get up to the Highlands again !

      Many thanks. Its nice to have a comment even if it is several weeks after the initial post. Its happened before. And I think the forum is so busy now that stuff falls off the front page quite quickly.

      p.s. please forgive if I have used CAPS, I had no intention to shout at someone, merely its 30+ years of Report writing whereby to draw attention to a IMPORTANT POINT caps are were used ! Sorry if I have inadvertantly caused offence ! I shall try and highlight more
      No problem. Your use of CAPS was mentioned on SKYE at the weekend. We CONCLUDED that you were merely ENTHUSIASTIC.

        I am a bit passionate about some things but trying real hard (nearly did hard in caps!) just stopped myself

        Duncan, I had no idea your thread was some weeks ago, I was just looking through enjoying some very nice photos of a lovely old proper ship !

              Not quite but the youngest, apart from the lady in the kitchen, was about 70 and at least one member had worked on a Fifie with his father.

                Dear Duncan,

                No idea how I missed your excellent post. Great to have the background story complimented with such a nice set of images. I particularly the second shot.

                Great stuff

                  Nice set of pictures Duncan, lovely to see a boat of that age still being used.

                    This is a prime example of great pics slipping off the mian page and therefore not getting comments on - of which I am guilty also.

                    Its a very informative and empathatic set - although there is something special about how you captured that last shot of her sailing off. Very nice mate.

                      I'm thinking pink sounds quite the opposite of CAPS, y'now.

                      Hey Duncan why's it called "Reaper"?, sounds a bit dodgy.
                      Also, where to old red sails go to die? : I want one, seriously.

                          why's it called "Reaper"?,
                          She harvests the bounty of the sea.
                          It was fun photographing her and her crew.
                          I find I get fired up emotionally by such things.
                          It was quick work as she sailed, lots with the 7-14 and then on with the 50-200. She looked so wonderfully iconic as she went.

                          I've no idea where you get red sails......in the Sunset?

                            Just thought about this. Do go. I went to the one at Leith years ago. Very busy but lots of photo opporchancities.

                            Here is one I took then. On an Olympus.
