  • Crooning while I work.

I was trying to trim the hedge in front of my house but was continuously interrupted by this Turtle Dove crooning non-stop in the old Oak opposite. So I had to abandon the hedge and rush upstairs to take a few shots from the bedroom window.

Yep! Try as I might I couldn't wait long enough for the bird to move a couple of inches. As you say it's always the same, I'll have to get the window moved!

Nice birds, never seen one of these. Shame about the twig, have to get the ladder out and cut it off ready for next time!
        Thanks

Very nice shot David, you've captured the pinkish tinge of the breast feathers well. Got to have a twig in the shot, it's more "natural".

            Thanks for sharing.

              Re: Crooning while I work.

I have respect for anyone who gets a nice picture of a wild bird. I have tried a few times, and discovered how difficult it is, even when they are sitting!

Nice colours, and I don't mind the twig as it's part of nature!

I'm resurrecting this old thread because we appear to have turtle doves in our garden at present, but I have yet to actually see one! The purring sound they make is loud and clear, so they must be near by, but all I see are wood pigeons and collared doves.

I read that turtle doves are in serious decline, so I feel privileged to have them here, but it would nice to see one, let alone photograph it!

Does anyone have any tips on find these elusive birds?

That is nice. We had them at the Fowlmere RSPB reserve in Cambs where we volunteer a few years ago. I just tracked them down by ear moving around and looking up into the trees until I found one to take a photo.

You could try putting down some of the feed that they like and see if you can spot one:
                  https://www.operationturtledove.org/...best-practice/

We stayed at a gite in Brittany some years ago and we heard some in nearby trees, but we could never spot them. It drove us nuts being able to hear them but not see where they perched!

Update - if you also regularly put out fresh water for birds they might come for a drink or bath.
