It's the same story on our local pool. Makes you wonder how there are so many ducks are about.

Great shotby the way, superb reflection.
    Thanks

Ducklings are regarded as a tasty snack by large fish such as pike and that elegant fisherman, the heron. If the entire brood survived you'd be able to walk from here to Oz on their backs.

And then there's the many Gulls as well.
I have seen times when the Mallards have formed the young into a creche with many adults watching over them.

          Thanks for looking.

They are easy prey for most predators and are a mere snack for a 10lb + pike, even Perch will take ducklings. Then there are the rats too, magpies, crows etc. Its a hard life!
              Thanks

Mallard are good eating, either one apiece or split between the two of you depending on your appetite. Pintail are even better but most people would say that Teal tops the list. Wigeon vary between OK and revolting depending on what they've been eating. All wild geese are excellent too.

I don't think foxes, or badgers, are much of a problem except when the duck is actually sitting in which case both the duck and the eggs are vulnerable. Once they can swim they're fairly safe from four legged predators although I daresay mink and otters have a go.

                          Re: The Survivor

here on Skye the young waterfowl get taken by Otters, Mink, Hen Harriers, Buzzards, Owls, Peregrines, Goldies and Sea Eagles, often just after the Eagles have taken the adults. I have even seen a Fox jump into a drainage culvert to take some young ducklings.

                          Great shot though.
