    Village Details:

I hope I am not making a rod for my own back, but in the spirit of seeing the small things.. here are a couple of details I saw today, together with my reasons for taking the picture.

This is a tiny part of a farm barn. It never gets direct sunlight and has consequently turned green.

I was fascinated by these semicircular patterns... All it takes is a cobweb, a leaf and the action of the restless wind to draw lovely geometric shapes.

And here are some fresh new leaves, caught red brown before they have turned green. I like the feeling of intimacy here, just a tiny little corner with lovely soft lighting under the tree canopy.

PS. Coming soon. My next series entitled "Closely Observed Drains"

Three nice images Pete. I would like to see the top one as a good black and white.

              It's just a sign:

              Confused? You will be...

A walkers and cyclists signpost on the edge of the village offers a cycle route, a cycle short cut and the Wayfarers way.
Interesting that the cycle signs only seem to come in the uphill variety :-)

                Closely Observed Drains:

                (See what you have done...!)

Here is a fairly standard anonymous rectangular cover, flush mount in concrete. Not a very adventurous design for a new Millenium. Let us hope the village has better to offer.

Yes: It is good to see the Stanton 1800 is still in use.
This stalwart of the drainage community will give long years of trouble free service, while adding dignity and style to any thoroughfare.

The triangular design is sturdy and well proven. A drain to be proud of.

                  There's a catch:

Here's the church gate catch in close up. I am certain this is the product of a local blacksmith. The basic construction and rudimentary decoration point to simpler times. I have no idea how old it is, but it still works just fine...

And by contrast, here's the gate latch in the paddock. This is that standard automatic field gate latch you see everywhere on your walks these days.

I was hoping to be able to tell you it is an Arbuthnott patent gate prognosticator or some such nugget, but I can't find any information about it's origins.

                    Memory Lane:

I don't know about you, but this little sepia corner stirs memories for me, and maybe for you too, if you are of a certain age and spent time under your Morris with a grease gun :-)

And in another corner of the old barn they are keeping used nails and staples (very much in the make do and mend farming tradition)

On our estate the Factor makes you use a nail 3 times before he'll allow you to trade it in for a new(ish) one. And you should see the problems they have in the office straightening out old staples.....

Don't get me started on having to use all 4 edges of the toilet paper.

                          Decorated!

Well well well.. I arrived at work yesterday and found the village green decked out in bunting!

This is up a week early for the street party, so it also covers the Easter weekend.

                          What next? A Maypole?

(Anyone else remember maypole dancing at school?)

Delightful photos Pete, I can remember the Grease gun way back in the 50's on a certain wire baler called a ross, as for the gate latch your detail is so good I think that we could all make one. Don't remember may dancing myself
but it did happen in the Village that I was brought up in. Thanks once again Pete always enjoy your photographs. Happy Easter to you and your family JohnR

Not so much a village detail as a nice interlude:

Lunchtime wander and I met a very nice old gentleman who drives this excellent 'BGT. It's the last of the chrome bumpers ones, late 74.

What a great character he was, a bit frail now, but he has owned two Aston Martins and several MGs including a TA in his long life.

Lovely weather, a nice chat about cars and engines, then back to work. All it needed was a pint of foaming Ale and it would have been perfect..
