  • Dunmail Raise,Lake District

Ok I've been promising to post some views for a while now,so this week as well as taking pics of aircraft, I purposely took some scenic shots too,
This one has been through HDR in photoshop, just learning the basics of the full blown PS as have only used lightroom in the past
    CC always welcome
    Kindest regards
    Mark

A very nice view with good detail, and no obvious HDR side effects. Maybe lacking a little contrast (on my monitor)?

Oh come on Mark, there must be a mil jet somewhere in that photo but I still can't see it!!

What a fab view though and good to show to what extent you've had to go to to get those excellent shots looking down onto passing jets - that's a fair old climb and I know there's no road at the top to walk down from as at Tebay, so have you parked near the bothy to walk up here?

Only comments about photo would be to try to find something in the foreground rhs (such as the large rock outcrop perhaps that you can see in the centre right of the image) to give foreground interest, and possibly to try darkening the sky a little to give more balance with the valleysides and to also contrast with the white clouds and contrails.

      Regards
      Chris

              Re: Dunmail Raise,Lake District

I knew that there had to be some aircraft somewhere in there!!
Re altering the landscape, it looks like the software you use possibly has darkened the whole image and you'll probably find that some software like ACDSee Pro 4 or Adobe Lightroom can be quite useful for being able to lighten and darken just a selected few tones of lightness can be quite useful, so that the light sky is more easily darkened without darkening the correctly exposed hillsides.
I've had a quick play with your image, and although this is totally subjective, hopefully it'll give an idea of what I mean. I've also subjectively cropped it a little to concentrate the view on the valley and Grasmere but quite honestly the overall composition was not an issue. BTW - one point that I use a lot in my design work is to end lines in logical places, and it's interesting making the crop so that the road exits in the bottom left corner - visually it suits my eye, but then you lose a lot of the feel of the big climb up to your location! So I've cropped to the area of the stream instead.

              Regards
              Chris

PS - Hope you saw my rubbish Cougar shot on Duane's FC posting. Also had a cracking Typhoon photo opportunity on a separate posting of mine.

Actually I prefer the original, the only thing I would suggest is a very gentle application of a noise program to remove the slightly spotty look to the sky.

Ta Mark - certainly shocked myself getting the sequence (I did make a wider version with 13 shots in it but not much good for showing on webpages!), but really pleased to get the clarity and, as you noticed, the fluff (not often you want fluff in your photos but for aviation photographers it certainly adds a bit of extra impact). First time I've seen Tiffie in more a ground attack role over Spade and doubt I'll see many more in such conditions. Certainly made up for the duff Cougar shot!
But as with your shots too, it's good to see that the Oly can give good credit for aviation shots, especially as the Tiffie shots were with the Oly 70-300mm albeit in ideal light conditions. Been tempted for extra pro lenses yet??

                        Regards
                        Chris
