Superbly shot, Peter. Especially No.2 that appears to be attacking you during the nesting season. Do your Lapwings nest on the ground as ours do?

I did a shoot on them two years ago and will create a new thread for comparison. Ours have a poisonous spur on the leading edge of each wing.

            Thank you both.

These were taken with the combination Peter suggested.

Thank you Ed. Had this been an Australian variant I would have ducked

              Thanks for your reply Mark.
Lapwing are ground nesting birds which usually use a scrape in the fields. I am horrified at your description of your Lapwing. I think I will stay here

Yes, a "scrape" in the fields is an apt description of their ground nest. Presumably they nest in the open where predators can't approach by stealth and are vulnerable to aerial attack.

Lovely images of a very endearing species, especially for their aerobatics in the mating season. I particularly like #1 and #3 which shows the brilliant plumage colours seen in bright sunlight. Well done

If you approach them they will hunker down, If you carry on they fly straight at you and circle overhead. Last year, this accidentally happened whilst walking across derelict land in search of insects. I recognised what was happening and left the location. Another man had seen what happened and asked what was going on. I told him but asked that he do not approach and certainly put his dog on its lead. He ignored my advice and just walked towards the nest site trying to find it - with his dog off the lead He had a dslr but with a short focal length lens - what he hoped to achieve I cannot for the life of me work out.
