  • First E-5 birds

So as per my thread in the E5 section, the camera arrived this morning, and after waiting like a kid on Xmas morning for the battery to charge, out I went, over to my local patch for some birds.

First impressions, this camera is a beast. ISO performance is excellent, and it seems to like the bigma better than the 620 as it focuses slightly quicker.

The video is also a great addition, havent posted any here, but I'll link to them later of redpolls feeding.

    Anyway, on to the pics:

    3.

    4.

These were all shot on P mode, ISO 100, WB auto and no noise reduction.
Any tips on the e5 and birding/wildlife much appreciated, but on my first outing, I am very pleased with the results!

I think its a good thing there is a shortage of E-5's otherwise I can see the wife getting upset

I have seen here and elsewhere a lot of very good bird shots with the E-5 and they do seem to have got the detail boosted with respect to feathers

    Enjoy your new toy

Great set of shots, the Bigma did a good job.

You said you used ISO100, while that setting for the E3 and some other Oly cameras gives the lowest noise and best resolution the E5's native resolution is ISO200 which allows you an extra stop.

Ah, is that why when selecting iso 100 and scrolling through the levels, it said 200 was recommended? All these little things to learn!

              Danny,

I am so thrilled for you to find out that you have bought your E-5. It looks like we have a lot to worry about if your first attempts are as good as this. Perhaps one day I might buy an E-5 but until then I will as ever enjoy seeing your work.

              Cheers

              Chris

                Very nice Danny.

I see from your EXIF these are between 246mm upto about 400mm so you are probably quite close to these little birds. Are you in a hide and do you use a monopod/tripod??
Also wish we had some of your weather here in the Southeast.
Agreed that the E5 seems to be best at ISO200 but is very usable at much higher ISO.

                All the best

                    Thanks Andy

I was quite close, but I wasn't in a hide. I was on my local reserve where I've been able to build up some trust with the woodland birds with reagular visits so they get quite close without fear.
The weather today was fantastic, alomost too good, as it went a bit contrasty towards the end of the afternoon!
I use a tripod all the time now, with a benbo ball head on top for quick and smooth movement of the bigma. If I opt for the 70-300mm I can handhold that.

I also find that ISO 200 is the best lowest ISO setting on the e5, there is not a lot of noise difference between 100-200 and I find the Dynamic Range better when on 200. I suppose 100 comes in handy for longer exposures.

Very nice, sharp photos by the way

Thanks for the useful tips on the ISO 200! I didn't know that was the best ISO value for the E5.
