  • E5 First Shots

Well what a lucky bloke I was yesterday, receiving my e5 (thanks Kerso) and having a Glam type photoshoot lined up with John (cant thank you enough John and cant wait for the next if you'll have me )

This was a big first for me, as Ive never done any type of glam photos (well not with a stranger anyway) and at night, with a new camera and lens, lots to take in but all very exciting

Heres some portrait samples taken on the e5 and 50-200mm at its lowest f stop and around ISO 250.

Im also really, REALLY impressed with the ISO on the e5, iso1600 seams to be the same as 800 as my e30 - photo begining with P is the e5 and SD the e30 - I think this is money well spent in itself (ignore the time, I hadnt set the internal clock at this point)

    Re: E5 First Shots

    Hi Steve

Really surprised no-one has commented yet.

A great collection with good skin tones and you have taken great trouble on composition.

It's hard to chose but I think I would go for #1 as a favourite but with #3 a VERY close second.

Just a few questions, what was your lighting arrangement? I do not do this kind of shoot but I am impressed with the result on all. Did you shoot jpg or did you convert on upload.

Great images and thanks for sharing
    Best Regards

Cheers Peter, yeah I was dissapointed no-one commented and thought maybe they wasnt that good.

Number 3 was what I had in my mind to acheive, so I was really pleased with that shot, its not often I head out to take a shot I want and nail it

To be honest John set up all the lighting and I borrowed one of his triggers and we shared the lighting. it was a 2 flash setup, one to the side with an umbrella and then one to the front for either a fill or rim light at the back.

I did shoot Raw and jpg, but ended up processing the raws to get the colours I wanted and then output to JPG

      Thanks again

Thanks for updating me on the setup etc. I wish I could do this sort of photography where you have control over the lighting and environment.

The reason I liked image #1 so much was the composition. Using the bridge in the way you have done provides great balance and draws you to the subject. Still, thats my opinion.

Interesting you used the RAW and not the jpg output. I started out taking both but reverted back to shooting RAW only. Particularly in my type of photography, the scene dictates the processing, not simply image data. I have an aversion to using images that have been processed by software that does not know what you wanted to achieve and dumps 'unwanted' image data. Still, I guess its the easy way and works most of the time.

Thanks peter, I'm glad you like the images.

You should have a go at the lighting its not too hard to learn and off camera lighting really does add that extra dimension to the image.

If I'm doing 100's of photos in a session ill stick to raw only, as I'm happy to be in full control of the processing, but if its a reasonable small amount of images ill use raw and jpg, because the Olympus jpg engine can create fantastic results that is sometimes hard to achieve yourself.

            Hi Steve
I didn't comment earlier as I don't feel qualified to comment on this type of photography. However, they all look great to me and considering this was your first outing with a new camera and a new type of subject for you, an excellent result all round.
The ISO comparison shots are very interesting, more E5 envy building here. must buy more lottery tickets.

            Regards
            Peter

she looked at me and said "It's official. I hate your camera. It's just so amazing and perfect I want one!"

Thanks peter, sorry to inflict envy, but if you can upgrade at some point, it is worth every penny

Simply a stunning set there, Steve ... the E-5 IQ is as impressive.

The E-3 struggles at iso800 but I'm enjoying the 50-200 that you used for these.

And a hugely provocative model I would add!
