  • A grave puzzle...

This image has been puzzling me for some time...it's the initials W & M at the top and the date of 2197 which is intriguing...

...so I decided to do a little research.

    http://www.lancashirechurches.co.uk/lythamstj.htm

...and I noticed that the text is by Tony Boughen...is that OUR Tony B by any chance? If so, I hope he's reading and can shed some light on this for me!

It's a beautifully carved headstone (my photo certainly doesn't do it justice!) and I'd be very interested to hear if there's anyone who knows a little more about it.

    Re: A grave puzzle...

I know thar there are many calendars e.g in Islamic we're in the year 1431 and in Hebrew 5771

See Wikipedia for more details http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_calendars

I have to admit not knowing of any that have a date like above in the recent past, but there are so many it's probably that is the reason

      Just a guess - might be a gravestone for a Free-mason?

      WM - Worshipful Master ?
      2197 - Lodge number ?
      ^ - on the square ?

I believe Wally's got it. A quick google reveals that Masonic Lodge 2197 is located in Douglas on the Isle of Man.

Brilliant work! It looks as though Wally is spot on.

A bit more digging led me to this...

          http://www.archibaldknoxsociety.com/

It states that the memorial to William Edward Callister was originally in Onchan on the Isle of Man, which ties up nicely with the engraving.

It's been fun researching it! Now to try and find out why the stone was removed from the Isle of Man and placed in Lytham St Annes?

                  Nice one Karel!

Thanks for all your help guys...this started out as a quick shot when I spotted the remarkably precise and beautifully detailed carving on this headstone, but it's turned into a bit of a cultural history lesson.
