      Re: Insects

Thanks John. We haven't had much rain here, just annoying drizzle that does no good in the garden. When I took these shots it was quite windy and I had difficulty catching the insects still enough.

          Re: Insects

I really like the composition on the single Damselfly shot, all in all a nice set of macros. It always seems to be too windy up here for that kind of stuff.

            Re: Insects

Thanks for the positive comments gents you've boosted my confidence. However I have to put my hand up to a few things.
            1. They are not macros.
            2. The composition was obtained largely by cropping.
            3. They were all taken with the BIGMA, hand held.

I really love the BIGMA and having bought it originally for bird photography I am enjoying exploring what it can do in other areas. It's certainly sharper at shorter focal lengths and with the 50-500mm range it should cover a lot of situations, if you can put up with the arm ache.

            Regards

Good shots ..even better now I know what lens it was.Have you got a monopod, that would help the arm-ache...lol

I have the 135-400 and like you have started to try other things with it.

I didn't know the Silver Y was a day flyer.....as I tried to nab some last summer at dusk and they were doing immpressions of Hummingbirds.I failed...he he

                  Re: Insects

You are correct Peter, the Bigma is very versitile. I met a Nikon man the other day with a long lens. He had made a holster on a wide leather belt into which the tripod foot of the lens slotted in. Great idea because it took the weight off the neck and left both arms free. He devised this so that he could use binoculars for spotting before taking photographs. I aim to make a similar system. It could of course be used with any long lens.

Thanks Keith. I do have a monopod but never get round to using it. Trouble is I have binoculars, scope with an 80mm objective lens that needs a backpack to carry it and the camera gear. I constantly have to decide which kit to carry and which to leave behind. The well known law usually operates and if I take the camera and binoculars all I see are distant birds that need the scope and vice versa. What I really need is a Sherpa or a Caddy.

The Silver Y is both a day and night flying moth so you stand double the chance of seeing one. Wonder when they sleep.

                    Regards

That sounds an interesting idea, must look into it.
