  • Inhabitants of the local pond!

Inspired by some of the wildlife shots on here of late I headed off across to a nearby pond to see what was about.

It was a pleasure to have an amble around in the afternoon sun, something I shall be doing more often now I think, sitting on the bankside watching the world go by.

    Cooling off!

    Fuzzy Duckling,

My First attempt at insects so any advice greatly recieved

An ID would be appreciated on this, A right bruiser compared to the Damsel Flies:

    Damsel being buzzed

    Solitary Damsels

    2

    Paired Damsels
    1

    2

    Flowers

    Poppies

    Golden Iris? (Not Sure)

Thanks for taking the time to look, quite a few pics here. Comments appreciated. All taken using the E400 with the Zuiko 70-300mm lens.

    Thanks
    Tim

Think the bruiser might be a Male Broad Bodied Chaser.

Thanks very much, It was a very pleasant afternoon. It appears that the bigger flying beast is a Black Tailed Skimmer. Been out on the mountain bike this morning (20 miles before breakfast ) and I have found a lovely wier pool I never knew existed. Worth a trip with the camera I think.
        Thanks

          Tim,

Great shot of the mallard shaking itself. You managed to get the head still and the wings moving, which is harder than it sounds! Good lighting, too.

Nice pics, love the shot of the Mallard, that's not that easy to get right.
            Regards Paul.

The Mallard is my favourite too. I have changed tact a little with birds I used to take one shot and move on, now I take 6 or 7 shots in quick succession of the same subject. This was the best of the bunch and the only one with the head in focus.
              Thanks

I agree with all the comments that the Mallard is the pick of the bunch

Re the approach I started doing that, but I've decided that I was getting lazy so have more recently tried to move back to fewer shots. Mind you I haven't taken a decent bird shot that I would upload in a while now. So I must take yours for inspiration
