  • First Effort

Hi - I am new to this game, and have been experimenting with Dof. I am quite pleased with this result, and comments

Good DOF. Composition wise I would have got rid of the branch and green leaves in background in the upper left corner.

Also thought I would share this, found it drowning in a bucket, resued with the dustpan & quickly grabbed camera.
Didn't want to get too close as had no shoes on!!

I hope it was grateful: I have to say it doesn't look grateful..

Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

Thanks, will try to ps it (not really got to grips with this software yet - still learning). Could not do anything in real life as rose was about 10ft up, and I did not have a step ladder to snip the offending branches

It did not seem happy, but quickly disappeared into undergrowth, so hope it survived.

That's a beautiful Staghorn beetle, I've not found one for quite a few years.
PS they don't wear shoes, so you could have got much closer.......

That's a nice shot of the rose. I agree with Radar, that the branch in the background can be cloned out and removed. I've given it a try in PS, you could still do more to perfect the edge than I have, I'va also sharpened it a bit (ordinary "sharpen" in PS) and used the curves tool that gives it a little more depth.

Beautiful shot of the rose Karen, nice depth of field control
I also agree with Radar and Cathrine with regard to removal of the top left hand branch/background and I would add perhaps with a slight repositioning within the frame (but that's just me)
A lovely shot never the less.

                    Re: First Effort

You got the dof just right and tones and colour of the rose are very good, while i do not mind the leaves in the background it is the highlights on them that is the problem. The eye is always drawn to the brightest part of a image and in this case you want it to be the rose head.

That's a Staghorn Beetle and I have to say they seem to be getting pretty rare to see this days, so its a good job you rescued it.
                    Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

                        Hi
Thanks to you all for your comments - much appreciated. Also thanks to Ringneck & Cathrine for removing the offending branches. I had a go myself, but made a right hash of it !!
Off now to practice some moving shots using shutter priority - what an exciting life I lead :-)
