  • Rochelle: model photoshoot yesterday

    Hi All

I had the pleasure of doing an outdoor model photoshoot with the gorgeous Rochelle, a local young lady who has aspirations of modeling. I haven't really done formal modeling shoots to be honest, especially outdoor ones; and so to get the chance to do this one was a super experience.

Though just a young lass, Rochelle is very good in front of the camera and I enjoyed taking her shots. The Oly 35-100mm was used a lot at f2, and by golly it's a superb lens. I mean absolutely superb. Really superb!

Here's a selection of shots from the shoot, I'd appreciate your feedback. (I am awaiting hers!!)

no 3 shows one of the issues I find with this lens - it's so easy to have the head on a tilt and get the 'rear' eye only in the dof; and I have yet to find a shot that way round that looks right.

The first in IMO the most pleasing - like the background, where was it?
The crop on the second is too severe at the bottom and the third, well it is a pity but her teeth rather draw one's eye .
Have you bought the 35-100 then John?

It was taken under a bridge on the canal, adjacent to Malpas rd, just before you get to the underpass on the M4 junction.

It's not a crop Dave... I like to get the composition right in camera, and that's the size of the original. I rather like the shot, but I agree it would be improved if I had included a little more of her chin etc.

... as the title of the images says... this wasn't part of the portfolio... it was a fun between shots, shot

I wish, Dave... I wish. It's now firmly on my radar and rather depends on what Olympus release [speculatively later in the year] as the successor to the E-3. Do I spend my money on; (1) a new camera, (2) a new camera and lenses, (3) a new lens.

Spot the cryptic clue that's in there...

          Re: Rochelle: model photoshoot yesterday

Took a look at your slideshow John and some of the shots have a shallow DoF, also the crop issue mentioned above is an issue for me. The main problem I see is that many of the shots are over-flashed, I would turn the flash down a tad.

Otherwise a nice set of shots.

First one is my favourite, too. Again you've balanced the colour of the bridge wood and the other background nicely - no, VERY nicely to the model's eye and overall colouring. Knowing that you used the same background (didn't you?) to take that lovely one of your daughter, I'd say you managed to completely change the mood of the portait to the model.

If I may compare it to your daughters picture, I think you did a really good job of just that: Getting the most out of two very different models using the same background. The two portraits are completely different. The (more forward) (I'm over-analysing here ) Rochelle aspiring model portayed in vibrant colours, and your daughter in her softer tones. Well done. I agree about the crops on the middle one and the back eye in focus in stead of the front eye in the third, but an unclassical crop of a face can make a lot of difference as well, so it's worth a go!

                Re: Rochelle: model photoshoot yesterday

                John,

Well done to both of you. There are of course many things that you learn every time you do a shoot and as you look through the slide show, no doubt you will have made a list of all the things that you will do differently next time.

By way of a comment to the model. It's her job to present herself in the best way posible. The purple straps of the underwear are a big distraction and she needs to make sure things like that don't happen.

In your first shot the in-focus tunnel roof is a big distraction and needs to be dealt with in PS. One of my pet hates is distractions so I always comment on them. The tight crop works very well, but works better if the shot is produced in a portrait format with the eyes on the top third. Again the flower for me detracts from the face, which is so much nicer to look at.

The shadow coinciding with the cheek line gives it the apperance of being a much harder shadow than it is.

One of the best ways to get the most natural smile, is to simply hold a conversation into which you inject the humour that brings it out. I can't remember who first said it but a good set of images is a record of a great conversation.

I do hope you treated her to "Pretty Things" as she deserves it and hopefully you will work togeather again. She certianly will have some top quality images to start a portfolio with.

Is she on any of the on-line model sites yet ?

For someone that hasn't done a "formal" model shoot, once again, well done. As you say these are good experiences and well worth while.

                  Re: Rochelle: model photoshoot yesterday

You're absolutely right John, this is a superb lens but it requires a lot of care in using at it's widest aperture, especially with being so close to the subject. With this lens (and the 14-35mm) I am constantly looking for subjects benefiting from a very shallow DoF and using f/2.0. They really are superb lenses.

Point taken with the High-key effect.

                    Re: Rochelle: model photoshoot yesterday

Gotta say folks that this is fantastic feedback... very welcome indeed and thank you.

Yes Cathrine, the location was the very same canal bridge for both Heather and Rochelle - and you are spot on re Rochelle being the aspiring model, in addition to this.. Rochelle is 17 and Heather is just 13 last week

Graham: great comment re the straps... must remember that, thanks, and as for the in-focus tunnel roof - wowza, now that I look at this you're absolutely spot on and I hadn't noticed it.

Personally, I thought the flower was a nice, subtle addition to the shot - it's mainly subjective I guess. I do concede though that the framing (not crop) missed her chin and had the resulting image had more of her chin in the shot it would have been considerably improved... shame on me!

Yep - this was my very first model shoot (apart from learning with Heather and her friends) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks for the feedback... greatly appreciated.
                    John

Ta Steve... you posted this as I was writing my response to Cathrine and Graham.

I am stunned at the quality of this lens... and what can be achieved with it. I also had the opportunity to try out other ideas last night with Heather and Emma (Hevs friend) and am in awe at what this lens can yield.

Here's two... one I liked of Emma... a play on a theme from me!! and a totally different image in style of Heather; again each image 35-100mm f2 at f2... effects are entirely intentional.

The lens makes me want to cry... Wish Olympus would lower the price on this and other lenses... How many divorces would have been avoided!
