  • sSussex visit

Spent an enjoyable few hours in Sussex today. A few pics for your comments.
Found this gate at the church in Kingston, never seen one before.

After walking halfway up the hill from the pub, this was what greeted us.

Saw this flower back in the village on the road side, anyone know what it is?

Finally, one I took earlier in Saltdean.

      Ah...thanks John.
I should know it, I used to grow comfrey on my allotment but cut it for fertiliser, I don't remember it ever flowering.

        Re: sSussex visit

The gate is a Tapsel Gate, unique to Sussex. Though close variants are not unknown elsewhere

Its advantages are that pall bearers could pass easily on either side, some www sites suggest that this could be done without breaking step, but this is probably wrong as a coffin should pause at the threshold to sanctified ground and then be escorted (led) by the priest. Indeed traditionally the burial ceremony began at the gate.

It obviously also keeps larger animals out.
