I stayed at the Holiday Inn, KC, back in 2011. We did not realise the significance of that area so walked about without fear or favour. Even walked back to the hotel late one night. Never saw or experienced any, shall we say, unsuitable behaviour or felt threatened in any way. We also had great views over Sydney from our hotel room. Looking forward to visiting Sydney in a few weeks so should get plenty of picture opportunities.
You probably weren't beatnik enough and had "TOURIST" written all over you!
Actually, The Cross isn't what it used to be; it has been sanitised a lot since 'the bad old days'.
That said, I daresay you could have gotten a fix if you had hung out in one of the questionable nightclubs!
We went on from there to stay with relatives near Melbourne. When we mentioned where we had stayed in Syndney they were aghast. "Lucky to get out alive", apparently. Looking like tourist? Sure we were. Rich picking you would have thought, camera slung around my neck etc, etc. But like I say, didn't feel threatened at all. Fabulous place to take photos though. I'm luck to have been to few major cities but Sydney is by far my favourite.
I was alone when I set up a pod to shoot light trails on the William Street Expressway that tunnels under Kings Cross. I admit to feeling vulnerable with a few Grands worth of kit with only my close resemblance to Bruce Lee to discourage molestation!
