  • Trying to be sold my own picture!

Last year I took an image that I shared on here, of a Milky Way ‘coming out’ of a mine shaft. I then submitted it in a competition for an organisation that I do respect.
Whilst it didn’t win, I was the Staffs choice and was printed and framed for an exhibition, I was aware of this and informed they would be auctioned off for proceeds towards the coffers. I was cool with that.

Today, I get an email saying auctions were difficult and they were going to sell it, and did I want to buy it for £100 plus delivery.
am I being unfair to think thats it’s a bit unreasonable? I have replied politely saying that I have a copy already but I was really tempted to say “are you taking the proverbial 🤣”

Hmm I'd be flattered if someone offered me £100 for a shot but having to buy your own for that seems a bit much. Maybe offer the price of printing and frame if you actually want it?

The ironic thing is, the printing and framing was done free by a sponsor! Which is why I feel it’s laughable. It’s like they are looking for easy option to raise funds. The winning pic got a lot f flack , just a seagull over water, which makes me thing they feel some images may not raise much by auction. I’m just laughing about it all.

It sounds a bit weird. How much would it cost to print and frame your own photo, it can't be as much as that?

It seems a bit of a lazy way out trying to sell the exhibition prints back to the original photographers rather than finding other buyers to raise some money. Perhaps the problem is people are not spending on this sort of thing in the current times.

Thanks, i think laziness could be the key phrase!
I tend to agree people aren’t spending money, but the area area of cornwall where I took the images has far too many second homes etc, so there was s definitely money if they looked for it. Sometimes people with money just splash cash for a bit of bling

I can understand your reaction to the offer; sounds like a ponzi scheme!
I've been consorting and fraternising with humanity for nearly nine decades

the behaviours of homo sapiens gets increasingly more bewildering.

£100 for a good quality print and frame isn't in itself outrageous but given the image is yours it does seem cheeky to basically say we can't put in the effort to see if someone will give us any money for it at auction.

I might have offered them what I thought the frame and print were worth to me - assuming you wanted to hang it on the wall and hadn't already - easy money etc.

If it's a charity I might have considered it as a donation but then there's no reason why you should if you don't want to.

      Odd!

        Very cheeky IMO

When I did an exhibition for a charity any unsold pictures were offered to the photographers on the following terms

They could have one FOC for supporting the event, if they wanted more than one they were charged the cost of printing/framing which, as I did all the framing myself, was basically the cost of the printing (oursourced), frames and mounboard materials only. The total coming to less than £20 per picture any remaining were de-framed and I have reused the frames in other exhibitions that I did for the charity
