The house next door to us caught fire many years ago ,the kids had found a lighter and set fire to the settee . The neighbour alerted us by banging on our front window , I rushed round shouted to his wife and kids to get out the back door . He was stood there trying to phone the fire brigade and I watched the phone melting round his hand .. I grabbed him and pulled him out .. and slammed the door shut .. apparently that saved the structure of the house as all the windows were shut and the fire destroyed the contents but ran out of oxygen . My most vivid memory was watching it creep up the wall and across the ceiling in seconds . Luckily no one was hurt but the idiots had no insurance . . This must have been 40 years ago in reading when we lived there

First assessment of the cause was a faulty boiler. The flue vent melted and dripped burning plastic onto garden furniture outside the house, but that blew out the kitchen window and the fire entered back into the building.
Strange thing but the fire traveled away from our house but the wind and smoke was blowing towards us.
We have a lingering smell, but only mild smoke residue to clean up.Graham
We often repeat the mistakes we most enjoy...

Thank goodness all are safe and things seem to be heading back to normal (for you at least)
I'm told it can take ages to get rid of the smoke and water damage in the impacted houses

Glad to hear nobody was hurt, physically. Though the loss of one's home and its contents like this must be pretty devastating.
