  • Wire to Wifi

I have a Lorex DVD recorder attached to two outside cameras, displaying on a monitor. The DVD player/recorder has a connector for a wired connection to my router.

Alas the two are 30 foot apart, and running a cable would be difficult.

Question is, "is there a gadget I could connect to the DVD player/recorder that would produce a Wifi signal for my router to pick up?"

    TIA

Why not try one of the powerline adaptors that you plug into the mains. Plug one in next to the router and the other next to your DVD recorder.

The powerline route is the first option I thought of (you will need two - one at each end) but Belkin also produce a "Wireless G Gaming Adapter" for just such an occassion. You can find this on amazon. Other gaming adapters are available (possibly). Other options are a plug in wi-fi extender that also has an ethernet port or a reasonably modern router configured either as a repeater (so same as last option) or put into "bridge" mode (making it the same as the gaming adapter).

In general wired connections are more robust than WiFi even using Powerlines over direct ethernet cables.
Streaming video constantly over WiFi is likely to slow down your other devices.
Another advantage of using powerline units is - you need a pair to begin with but if you want to add another device in another location - even a powerline>WiFi adapter to boost the signal you only need another unit, not a pair.

Thanks all for replies and advice. But I think the camera must be Caput. It just won't log onto the Wifi even when a metre away. Could there be a link to the fact I had my "Copper wire" internet changed to fibre????

The change from copper to fibre broadband will mean a different router so you will need go through the procedures to link the camera to the wi-fi again (or create a wi-fi profile identical to the one on the old router).

        How old is the camera?
I have a couple of music streaming devices that can only use WEP for their WiFi "security" and modern routers don't offer that as it's not possible to adequately protect the connection.

Do you have the old router? Put it into pass-through (bridge) mode so it is not routing to/from the BT splitter but acting as a hub and plug a cable from one of its 4 ports into one of the 4 ports on the new router.

Yes I do have the router. My problem (one of them) there is I am unsure of the how to connect, and if it did, what App I would use to view the video stream....
