  • Nature Bites Back, Again

It seems that HIV virus was picked up by hunters killing chimpanzees for food. You would think that this would be a lesson for humans.

Apparently not, as the present spread of virus from Wuhan originated from a market selling seafood and live animals like wolves and civet cats, I doubt seafood was the source or that the mammals were bought as pets.

    Coronavirus Pandemic?

Have to say this is very worrying.

    https://www.businessinsider.com.au/s...-deaths-2020-1

The simulation predicted a devastating impact.

The Chinese seem to be reacting quickly

China has pledged to build a new 1000-bed hospital within six days in Wuhan, the epicentre of a deadly virus that is sweeping across the country and through ...

The virus is in the same group as Rhinovirus, the Common Cold virus but I don't know how relevant that is.

For anyone who missed in the news, here is a video of the drone diggers:

Wow a 1000 bed hospital in a week that's amazing. Looks like we have a lot to learn from China in some areas.

I expect they have been diverted from opening a new coal mine this week.

Kenya has been screening everyone flying in on international flights from China this week. During the Ebola outbreak, flights coming in from West Africa were banned and stopped. The other problem we are facing in Kenya is the plague of locusts sweeping across the country destroying crops. The locusts arrived in from Ethiopia attracted by last months heavy rains. I heard on the World Service yesterday how the Kenyan government has appealed to experts around the world for help in killing the locusts.

Yesterday I accidentally saw a ghastly “Sun” photo online of a bowl of soup which contained the disembowelled contents of a bat and the bats smiling face and head in the bowl. The comment from the Sun was around the C virus from the bat and the woman in China eating the bat soup....eek!
          All the best

Some old & elderly friends of ours emailed me yesterday to ask if they should cancel their imminent 4-week trip round Thailand because of this coronavirus. They go annually and do a lot of driving.

Of course, anything might happen, but two facts that are relatively definite are that an estimated 24,000 people die on the roads of Thailand every year, and that roughly twice as many people died in England and Wales from falls during the time of the SARS outbreak than died anywhere from SARS.

Maintaining a sense of proportion in the face of press-spun travel death fears is always necessary. Yes, you can spend your life cowering at home following the same routine tedium while feeling (falsely) safe, but in my view you die a little every day doing that.
            Regards,
            Mark

Yes, of course during most troubles across the globe (or even in the UK) it's the risk of disruption that is always far greater than the risk of theft, harm or death. The impact of disruption is something you can do something about by a bit of careful planning (e.g. purchasing everything on credit cards, having travel insurance, knowing alternative routes & modes of travel etc etc).
...and for sure being streetwise by taking a few sensible precautions about where and when you go with expensive belongings ;-)

On Sunday, China announced a nationwide ban on the sale of wildlife in markets, restaurants, and e-commerce platforms. Wild and often poached animals packed together in Chinese markets are blamed as incubators for viruses to evolve and jump the species barrier to humans.

            "BANG, BANG, BANG, etc., etc.,"

Not the fireworks traditional at Chinese New Year but the slamming of stable doors all over China.

                The scammers are taking advantage:

With sad predictability cybercriminals are exploiting the Coronavirus outbreak that occurred in Wuhan, mainland China, and is now causing new infections around the world.

The confirmed cases slope is continuing upwards and an almost prefect straight line, becoming a tiny bit steeper since yesterday. I can't see it not reaching at least 100,000.

As for the official mortality, we are starting to hear admissions that some are not being included.
