  • A difference of opinion

I am not seeking medical advice from any of the members.

Recently, I was admitted into hospital for the treatment of food poisoning. In A&E, I was given an emergency CT scan abdomen and chest. An aortic aneurysm at 5.2 cm was seen. The medics wanted me 10 days post discharge, to have an MRI scan to measure the aneurysm again. They said how in Africa, an MRI for measuring aneurysms is the gold standard.

I emailed a copy of the CT scan and the report to a lead vascular surgeon in the UK and in reply, he said an MRI of the aneurysm would not be helpful and what I need is a full duplex ultrasound vascular scan which will show the aneurysm 'live' with its internal and external measurements. In his opinion, I should have the ultrasound scan in February. When I asked to have the ultrasound in Nairobi, the medics here refused to do the test, citing the MRI is king! At 5.8 cm a repair/graft will be needed. Hopefully, it won't come to that, but if it does, I will have the repairs done in the UK.

So in February I am flying to London to have the vascular ultrasound scan and follow up appointment with the vascular surgeon, both private.. Amazingly, I am not in any pain, but I do not want to take a chance. Its a shame the experts had a difference of opinion over what is the gold standard in vascular diagnostics, but my money is on the UK Doctors getting it right.

In the meantime, have a wonderful and peaceful Christmas and New Year
    All the best

    Phil

As an innocent / ignorant fearer of aortic aneurysm - I would be on a plane back to Blighty asap with an appointment with the consultant on the day after touchdown - but as I said I am an innocent / ignorant fearer of aortic aneurysm

Wouldn’t you have to phone for an appointment? Assuming you touched down around 0830 when the surgery opened.

That's doesn't sound like good news Phil. I think I'd have had the MRI done whilst waiting for the UK tests. You certainly seem to be going through the wars recently. Hope all goes well and you can have a good Christmas.

It must be nice when you can contact a "Lead Vascular Surgeon" in the UK via email and get a response. We can't even contact our local GP's surgery by email and phoning means a 30 min wait in a queue listening to terrible recorded music. Maybe this indicates the benefits of being in the fortunate position to pay privately as opposed to the NHS.

                    I hope all goes well.

These things tend to be without symptoms and I think pain would be an exception.

Jax Every one can pay for private treatment, it is a matter of choice on how to use your assets, if the need was high enough you would sell your car, reduce your house size etc to be able to pay. Similar for GP support there are private GPs that can give you an on demand service. It is your choice.

I don't recall stating I couldn't pay for private treatment or in fact that anyone else couldn't. Thank you for your valuable advice though and I will keep it in mind.

I hear what you are saying and I did ask the UK surgeon if I needed to fly back immediately. He said no, leave it for 3 months. He only operates at 5.8 cm or bigger. It is the same protocol for the NHS and it is something I have to accept.

Hi Tim, I won't be involving my GP in Bristol as I am sorting this out myself. She will get a letter from the specialist after I have been seen.
