  • London hotels for a frugal American tourist

It was suggested by "fluffy"over at FTU that I submit this thread over here because you should be more knowledgable about this.
My wife and I will be visiting London in Sept. and we have been looking for hotels and/or apts. (If some friends will commit to coming with us, an apt would be better) We don't want to spend much over 150pounds/night and be close to the obvious tourist spots. We also don't want to be in an area with no restaurants. I know that this makes it more difficult. WE are looking at the Lime Tree and the Ormand among others , to give an idea. The Reuben and Charing Cross are both booked up the time of our trip. We will be staying initially with friends form Surrey that we met on our honeymoon 20 yrs. ago and reaquainted with in Mexico on our recent anniversary, then on to London for sightseeing. Any suggestions? As with FTU, I promise some pictures.

I can't recommend any hotels, but as one of the 'musts' for tourists is Tower Bridge, it's worth checking their site for bridge 'lift' times. A bridge lift is quite dramatic!

(NB. The site seems to be currently down!)

We stay here at weekends, because it's mainly a "Business" hotel and the rates are good at the weekend. VERY close to Tower Bridge and underground, DLR & buses

      Enjoy the visit.

        Graham,
Thanks, this group of hotels look like a definite possibility.

Again, not a hotel but a suggestion for some tourist stuff. If you are going to go on the London Eye then don't forget to check out the London Aquarium which is right by it - its quite something.

The Marriot at Regents Park is`nt too expensive as it`s just outside the centre of London, yet only a 2 minute walk to Swiss Cottage Underground Station which will get into the west end in about 10 mins

                    Jeff,

I retired from work some 5 years ago and so, if I need a hotel, I look for something that is good value but where I expect it to be of a reasonable standard.

In my experience in the UK small hotels can be of vary varied standards to say the least, so I always stay in one of the large budget hotel chains.

                    (1) My first choice is Premier InnHoliday Inn ExpressTravelodge is a similar chain. The price like a budget airline so if you book for some time ahead you will get cheaper rates.

The rooms are usually the same price for one or two occupants breakfast is extra...

You will find the websites if you Google the names I have put in bold.

                    Hope this helps,
                    Peter J
