  • Guess the lens part 5

OK. Here is an unusual lens I had for a year. I kept it long after I bought, tried and sold various Hexanons. Eventually I had a funny turn and sold all my manual lenses. Now I really regret selling this one.

    No, its not a 50mm

I have only seen one of these on ebay since I had this one, and it was the wrong fitting. Grrr.
Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

        Mmmm...

helios 40-2 is an 85mm f1.5 - Rare and expensive. Too expensive! A Jupiter 9 does come close for a lot less dosh.

Oh, helpful hint, f2 is wide open BTW

Oh yes, I figure you mean the legendary Kiron 28mm f2 ??

I eventually tracked one of those down (well the Vivitar badged version). It had oiled and stuck diaphragm (like they eventually all get) so I got it cheap. It was ferociously difficult to dismantle and repair. Yes I did get it working again.

No, it was not that legendary, and no it was not as good as this lens IMHO

However you are closer than you might think. Very good guess :-)

Yes, that's what I was thinking of... but wrong, eh! There's the Komine version which I think is better, but maybe not 'legendary'.
Maybe a Zuiko 28/2? A lens I'd really like to have.

Hm, was the clue in the OP (mention of Hexanons)?

                  Could it be a 35mm f2 Hexanon?

OK, I thought I had won this one, but I have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory...

It was indeed the Komine version Vivitar 28mm f2.0 "Close Focus" lens. Not perfect, but few lenses are, and quite an ugly duckling* on the front of the camera. I also tried the Kiron version (as mentioned above) and for my money the Komine was a better all round lens.

Well done one and all! To all our other readers who are mystified by these arcane details of naff old glass, I offer our thanks for your patience :-)

                    Pete

*I know it isn't important, but good optics in an ugly lens are not quite as nice as good optics in a nice looking lens. Compared to my trio of like-styled Tamrons (the 200mm, 135mm and SP90) that Komine Vivitar did look ugly!

Thanks Pete - I enjoyed the game.

I too like the Tamrons, especially the Adaptal 2 sort which I think, on the whole, are designed brilliantly. Optically, ergonomically and aesthetically.
