Apparently Boris is going make it compulsory for all asylum seekers to watch back to back episodes of Dad's Army so they know how great Britain was.

On the other hand, I am pleased to see that Jacob Rees-Mogg is giving lessons in basic English grammar to his fellow MP's.

        Lol M8!

I think JRM is more concerned with improving punctuation and eradicating tiresome buzz-phrases 'moving forward'.

There's something seriously wrong with that person. When he was a back bencher he was slightly amusing in a Bertie Woosterish sort of way, but he's become more sinister now that he is in a position of influence.

Not sure there is anything wrong with JRM, but he does seem to live in a parallel universe in Dickensian times!

I wish him the best of luck demanding that his younger colleagues use and understand Imperial measures.

I wonder if he tenders !0/- notes in the Commons bar?

And how uncoordinated and behind everyone else some can be.

He does make a few valid points, but a double space after full stops? That's a new one on me. Maybe he really wants to start a new paragraph but is feeling too timid.

However, is this important in the context of the huge problems we are currently facing? I think not and by any measurement, metric or imperial, he is clearly better suited to be in a museum than in government.

                        Re: Compulsory army training

Two spaces after a full stop was a standard practice in the days of typewriters. With the advent of wordprocessors the practice was dropped (or forgotten) I was involved with a word processor which was essentially produced in the US but we were trying to interest part of the civil service in using it, and one of their requirements were for a double space after the stop.

I do not know if MS Word has double space after a stop as a preference or not, if it does not then that will be one of the reasons the double space option has fallen out of practice.

MS Word has been responsible for several changes in the way language is printed eg the triple consonant issue with concatenated words in German when hyphenating the compound word when a new line is needed. In my world, compliance with local custom was essential.

I used to use LaTex a lot for producing nice text output. AIRC it put a double space after a full-stop. See here for a discussion:

I've been reading a question on spaces between sentences on a sister site. The answers there seem to imply that the days of double spacing between sentences are over, and that this was a relic of the

The LaTex discussion on the use of the n or m space gets quite heated, perhaps Rees-Mog shoud get involved with the LaTex discussion especially as he comes from the newspaper industry.

That was an environment I was in for a chunk of my working life, working for a Canadian WP company called AES. We were all through the civil service, military and energy sector, were until the PC came along and no-one really thought it a threat. One of our main competitors was Wang (US). There was some IBM and a few Olivetti (coming from their typewriter background)
