I use an Macbook Air and when I typed into the address bar the first couple of letters, it would auto fill, but now I have to type in the whole address. I cannot remember changing anything, any ideas why this should happen, it is a pain having to go to google to find what i want, like this forum.
And when i do get to the site I want to, the address bar is empty, no address in there.
Yes it does, I think. I will check it out. What is maddening is that I haven't changed anything, the blasted machine has!
Re you joke John, it was in very bad taste in my book.

Dave, does the Mac System not have features such as "Favourites" where you simply save web sites such as this forum and you can access it with one click ?
If not, maybe you need a proper system such as Windows

The joke is Windows, methinks... and my response? "10"!!
Dave, it's probably due to recent updates to Safari. There have been a few recently for security reasons. Which is your operating system? Yosemite? El Capitan? Sierra? Or the dreaded High Sierra? i still use Yosemite, and haven't had that problem.
However, in Preferences for Safari, you will find a check box under "Advanced" that says "Smart Search Field" and "Show full website address"; mine is unchecked.
Under Search: "Include Safari Suggestions" should be checked;
"Enable Quick website search" should be checked.
Also "Include search engine suggestions" should be checked.
Thanks Keith, but all is as you suggest and it still don't work. I am using El Capitan. I will just have to use the "favourites" to get where I want to.
Yeh yeh.......Now the b****y iMac has conked out altogether. This happened once before, it just died. Turn on and all i get is a white screen. Last time I booked into a mac clinic, but tried it before I went and it worked. i will try that in the morning.
I reckon that Ed is correct, they are females, of the worst kind.
I was just musing over whether Sapper looks anything like John Cleese......
No I don't Keith. After trying to turn the iMac on holding down the cmd, shift, P and R keys, not easy I can tell you, it still would not cooperate, so I resigned myself to upgrade. (didn't take much I can tell you).
I left if for five minutes, and just turned it on again, giving it one last chance before I took a stick to it, and the blessed thing worked. I will get a new one eventually, but all the time it works, I will not work it too hard.
I am not sure what caused the problem, the last thing I did with it before it died was to open Luminair and try to edit some pics. Not sure if I want to do that again though.
