  • What is so wrong with red trousers?

I think I need help from those who are more fashion aware than I am.

We recently visited an M&S Outlet store, and as per usual SWMBO and I went our separate ways.

I spotted some nice, red/maroon coloured corduroy trousers on display, and decided to try them on.

They fitted very nicely, and I was feeling quite pleased with myself until I left the fitting room. I was standing in front of a large mirror talking to an assistant when I heard a familiar voice behind me demanding "you can take those off!" The assistant was laughing in a knowing sort of way. "But I like them" I pleaded. "Well you can go shopping by yourself if you're going to wear those" was the reply.

As tempting as that offer sounded I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and all that, so I took my red trousers back to the rail and hung them up again, leaving the store empty handed.

This subject was raised again later in the day in a FaceTime call with our daughter at university, where she expressed her own horror at the prospect of her father being seen in public wearing red trousers.

The point is, I regularly wear a red jumper and/or outdoor jacket without complaint, so why is it considered such a sartorial faux pas to be seen wearing red trousers?

LOL, women are wonderful but mysterious in their ways! At least you can put the money that you saved towards a nice new lens!

I decided to wear some smart reddish corduroy trousers to take my date out on our first date. When I arrived to pick her up she opened the door she said before we go to the pub I had to go back and change my trousers as she refused to be seen out with me wearing them. I agreed to go back and change them. 45 years of marriage later my wife still won't let me wear red trousers.

Perhaps you should have swapped them for pink ones!

Red trousers for a man - definitely a double no! But corduroy red trousers is like treble no... no, no, no

Probably wasn't the "red" but the "corduroy" that she objected to!

But if Nigel is really to live up to his epithet, what about puce-coloured corduroys? Or even metallic gold corduroys? Now those would outdo Portillo!

With your red jacket and jumper she probably didn't fancy the full Father Christmas look. Don't you have a red Jag too? Is there something you would like to tell us?

Ron, she probably thought he'd disappear when he stood in front of a pillar box!

How sad! I wear maroon cords from M&S, and even some deep purple ones in the winter!

Absolutely nothing wrong with wearing red trousers. I have been wearing them from years back as the pic shows me in an Olympus group pic in 2008.
I have at least three pairs in the wardrobe awaiting an outing for the first time. The trouble with decent corduroy they last for quite a while, my current ones must be at least two years old.

I think it depends upon who is wearing them. Barrie looks confident and comfortable in his, cultivating a classic, ageless style. I would resemble a fugitive from the 1970's fashion police. I can't recall seeing a picture of Naughty Nigel so I couldn't possibly comment - except to say his wife probably knows him better than anyone else.

BTW I can't wear a cravat either, nor a jacket with tails or virtually any type of hat. I did used to look rather dashing in a pair of Rohan walking breeches though, even if I say so myself - but that was three decades ago and ten inches less circumference of the waistline.

Generally though, whatever I wear it looks like I've been dressed by the Council. At least Nigel's wife still feels she can positively influence his dress sense; mine appears to have given up in despair!
