I came across this interesting video in which a frustrated photographer examines the issue of too many people and impolite behavior making landscape photography difficult at beautiful locations. It's definitely an issue that deserves to be addressed, and his take on it is worth hearing. Brendan van Son recently posted this video in which he asks if photographers are ruining photography for other photographers after finding himself frustrated by both the number of people and their behavior at a beautiful mountain lake.
The comments are better than the article/video. I especially liked the story about the Nikon user in the Lake District, I've experienced similar myself.

The comments seem to give a good idea of it's content, and are good even though I've not reached the Nikon one yet.

I watched the video and liked it. It's probably the closest I'll ever get to that lake so it was worth the watch. I think he makes his point quite well and in a fairly balanced and sensible way actually if you watch to the end. Wonder if he got the Aurora he was after that night? Personally I've suffered this a few times but more so just the opposite where as soon as people realise they move out of the way so you can take your shot. I've certainly got out of others way often enough. Maybe I'm just a tourist after all

And let's face it, when you are standing there in the rain with your dripping wet Oly, praying that the rain won't get inside the lens or camera, patiently waiting for ten generations of Chinese people taking snaps of every possible combination and permutation of their extended family standing in front of the monument that you are desperate to photograph, you're bursting for the loo, but daren't go away to find one, because when you come back there'll be another extended Chinese family doing the exact same thing with even more permutations, you'll wish you'd never heard the word "camera"!"
I'm sure we've all experienced similar things at tourist spots!
I don't know if he got the Aurora but if the video was from last week there was a spectacular show around here last Thursday which I completely missed.

We went on the Jacobyte steam train from Fort William to Mallaig last summer. I had forgotten just how many smuts find their way into railway carriages, but then nostalgia is never as good as it used to be.
Anyhow, the train was crammed with tourists armed with Selfish Sticks that were stuck out of most of the carriage windows. I was just praying that a lineside tree or signal would snap the wretched things off, taking their ubiquitous iPhones with them.

One time, on the train to London, when the train went through a tunnel, he opened the window and put his arm out as far as he could, trying to find out how far away the wall was....! Strangely, he still had both arms when we got to London.

I often think people like that have a very different take on 'danger'.
For several years I worked with a chap who had been a Hurricane pilot and Group Captain during WWII. He had been shot down twice by the Germans and on the second occasion spent some time in prison in Italy awaiting execution. He and another British pilot only escaped by killing an Italian guard who was drunk and half asleep.
He was an interesting character, and whilst only about 5' 2" tall he clearly hadn't lost his knack for wearing down those that he didn't like. He also had total contempt for the Germans!
As luck would have it I had to fly out to Germany with him on a mission to a small shipyard on the island of Nordeney, one of the Friesian islands off of the north coast.
The flight out to Bremen was uneventful enough on a Lufthansa 737, although there were a few inevitable comments about the Hun. The fun started on the next leg of the journey in a 12 seater turbo prop, which flew low along the coast to our destination, almost clipping the hedges as we went. Nordeney is a popular holiday destination for Germans, and it was clear that we were the only Brits on board.
Anyhow, as we flew along the coast I saw a large abandoned concrete structure, and like an idiot I pointed this out to my colleague, wondering what this place was. His eyes lit up and without hesitation he replied, in a very loud voice, "oh yes; that was a jolly old Gerry submarine base. The last time I was over here we were giving Gerry a damned good hiding. Put quite a few of the b******* in the briney".
I was very conscious of the Germans on board turning slowly around and staring at us. If only there had been a parachute I would have jumped without hesitation.
I noticed in the video that he used hard and soft grads in combination. I've been doing that for years but didn't realise others were doing it.
The video has certainly created a bit of a stir, there was another photographer's shot of Moraine Lake posted on 500px today with a very long comment about photographers and crowds.

Last autumn I spent a few days in the Rocky Mountains National Park in Colorado. The popular locations had a healthy showing of photographers at dawn, but I found nearly everyone to be very respectful of others. I'm in the same boat as them - so I'm not going to complain. It's the way things are.
Of course, the much wider issue of damage to the environment and destruction of wildlife that tourism (of all kinds) brings is a real problem.
I find the image of the harpist in a landscape positively grotesque!
Is it an image of a harpist in a landscape, or an image of a landscape with a harpist in the foreground? But worst of all - she's so big and so black, in contrast to the slim elegance of the trees!
There seems to me just so much wrong with the image!
