  • Wolfgang Suschitzky - Photographer

For a few years now, I have subscribed to the daily blog written by The Gentle Author. I'd like to share today's post which is about a consummate photographer. Steve (Ricoh), I think this might resonate with you especially.

Thanks David, I enjoyed reading about Wolfgang and viewing some of his marvellous images that he created. Historical urban record fascinates me; I know you have to be careful for what you wish, but I'd love to travel back in time with my camera - as long as I could be back for teatime in my own home.

Fascinating photographs. What jumps out at me is the lack of people on the streets and traffic on the roads. If you took a photograph at any of those locations today you'd have trouble seeing anything for the mass of people and cars.

Thanks to Dave for brining to our attention this great photographer. I for one had never come across him previously, wonderful evocative pictures, very much in the mould of Henri Cartier Bresson. I Googled him to see more of his work and recommend others to do the same, you wont be disappointed. Stunning shot of London Zoos Guy the Gorrila a stand out for me. Ian.

I've just done the same using Pinterest - today and for many days more he's become my Usain Bolt of photography

The name stood out, I can remember seeing his work in A.P. sometime in the mid 50s his pictures always stood out. Thanks for posting.

It's worth scrolling down to the link leading to the article about Wolfgang's sister, also a photographer and a very naughty girl by all accounts

Being of a certain vintage, I remember Guy the Gorilla well. I lived quite near London Zoo and used to get the occasional day's casual work in the restaurants during the school holidays. Fifteen bob a day, plus two shillings worth of food vouchers. Hard work washing plates all day!.

As reported she did seem to be a naughty girl; Corbyn and McDonnell would have had her knighted, possibly.
She's accused of staging, and if so she was a bad girl. Much prefer her brother's work.

Probably used a grain magnifier and twiddled the height adjustment to get the grain in focus, as it is done today. Can't beat it.
