  • Who called whom?

    Yesterday our landline phone rang.

I picked up the receiver. There being no immediate sound in the earpiece, I said "Hello". Back came the automated response "Invalid option. Please call again".

    It is me?

    No, it's not you.

    This is the future calling...
Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

Reassuring that someone thinks I have one!

Bit like banks calling and not trying to prove who they are when asked!

I'm beginning to think that the correct response was "Goodbye". Next time...

I get these type of calls a lot. I have caller ID on my phone and the usual ones with no one there are International ?

I used to get a lot of calls from "The Computer Support Department" saying they have detected a problem with my computer. I just say I am a Mac user and they immediately hang up. Not had one for over 6 months but did get one yesterday.

Most are international and most ask for my son, who is at work at the time, they usually want to help him with a "claim". I have a call blocker which I enjoy using.

I miss-typed the Royal mail url recently and got a popup, locking my screen, saying that the "system" has detected that my PC was compromised and that I should not shut it down as that could lose files forever. They gave an 0800 number to call so that MS support could fix my PC.

I closed it down, having noted the phone number and forwarding it to the London Police phishing club after a reboot. My PC and files are fine.

A friend of mine keeps a police whistle by his phone and has given quite a few alleged Microsoft employees a nasty headache with it over the past few years...

                      Re: Who called whom?

I have a BT 8500 phone which asks callers who are not in my approved list to state their name and press # before it will ring. It's been 100% effective at blocking unwanted calls. All callers' numbers are recorded so I can check back and see who has called, and a web search for an apparently genuine but unknown number invariably returns the name of a nuisance caller. Peace at last .
                      Regards
                      Richard

My friend is a Mac support provider, he really enjoys seeing how long he can keep them on the phone before they realise the computer isn't a Windows one!

He managed to keep one on the phone for several minutes while describing the feedback from his iPad...

I have very much enjoyed doing the same. I asked the caller which OS I was using, to which she replied "we don't have that information, but we can see that your computer is infecting the entire internet with viruses." Oh yeah.

She told me to find the CTRL key at the bottom left of the keyboard, and then press the Windows key next to it. I told her that the key was marked CMD, whereupon she gave me a load of abuse, and said that I should go to a f****** kindergarten to ask which OS I was using!

Well and truly rumbled I would say. Either that or a Microsoft employee was seriously overdue for some re-training.

                            Re: Who called whom?

I feel it is my duty to waylay the "Microsoft Technical Support" for as long as possible.

A new scam is the caller claiming to be calling from BT tech support claiming that my machine has a virus which is corrupting their (BT's) server)

Given that BT is not my ISP I do not cooperate and eventually get threatened with having my internet cut off - as you can see by this post the threat made two days ago is very effective.

I find my sister has the best solution to this - she is in her eighties and gets these calls. She waits for a while when they give her the spiel, and then says, wells that's interesting, I must do something about it, but don't know why you are so concerned, I don't have a computer..............
Maybe we should all say, well actually - I don't have a computer - FREAK OUT the other end....
