    Agreed. Which is why I rely on RAID 5EE and good old fashioned LTO tapes!

      Repeating this again because I think it is succinctly put and hits the nail squarely on the head. Perhaps it's drifting off-topic a little bit but it is still a sound view IMHO. Thanks Derek.

        I also have the view that disc drives have two states:
        about to die
        or
        dead

        Data does not exist unless it exists in two or more places
        This space for rent

          Agreed again!

          Modern hard drives are very reliable, but they also hold huge amounts of data.

          This reliability has made us all very complacent, as few people think about data loss until it actually happens to them.

          I have installed solid state hard drives (SSD's) in my laptop and two desktop machines, and I am very happy with their performance. However, I have a horrible feeling that they are even more likely to expire unexpectedly, so I make a point of creating drive images (for painless recovery to a replacement drive) and performing regular backups.
