Re: OK Hands up
I get discomfort in my hands and feet although it's not consistent. Sometimes just the fingers of one hand or sometimes the meaty part of the palm. Sometimes nothing! Putting it down to old age

Re: OK Hands up
Hi Ulfric, ok we do repairs to crankshafts and sometimes when they fail the trauma causes hard spots to form which must be removed as they can cause cracks or worse, if there is enough metal you may be able to machine them out if it's not to deep, if you only have limited metal you can heat treat the crank in situ and then finish machine and polish to the bearing size.
you do a heat profile so heat it up slowly 30 Deg c per hr then soak for say 4 hrs @ say 600 Deg c then cool @ 30 Deg c per hr until 200 deg c switch off allow to cool to ambient temp while drinking beer
next check for bend and use a ball pean hammer
to straiten if necessary
HARD SPOTS
,
AFTER HEATING
,
CERAMIC HEATING BLANKETS
,
It doesn't always work as sometimes you cant fix the bend and you cant do it if their are any cracks, but due to the replacement cost of a crank and not to mention the cost of cutting a big hole in the side of your ship etc. it's worth a go

Re: OK Hands up
That's either a b***** big crankshaft or you've got pretty close up, what is it from?

Re: OK Hands up
Hello Cliff,
I like the photos of your work anything to do with mechanical engineering is interesting to me, that's a proper crankshaft you've got there! What sort of weight is it and do you hammer it by hand or machine? I presume you need to balance it after treatment or do you machine it off evenly?
Regards Jim.

Re: OK Hands up
Thanks Jim for your kind comments, if I can remember I think it was about 7 tons
all the peaning is done by hand with a 3lb hammer
we use a tooling head to turn off the metal with a single point tool, running in the hopefully undamaged radii at the sides of the journal as our datum using nylon pads and driven using a chain drive

Re: OK Hands up
So the metal sometimes "bulges" during failure (or not?) and you can (heat it up then) beat it into submission and re-lathe it in-situ and heat treat with a cute pink electric blanket?
Cool.
I'm very glad I asked.
Yesterday I was heat-treating too
Smithing flat a few big allen-keys, did a water quench to see if they were going to get hard enough ... oh yeah.
It told me they're going to be good with an oil quench when I've fire-welded them into some edges.

Great to hear you have the new camera, did it come with a free bag of spuds or just the grip?Ian from the Cotswolds

Re: OK Hands up
He he, no spuds but I did get a pack of envelopes and a book of stamps to send off for the grip and mmf3, I picked it up on the way to a job in Portsmouth and got the first play with it in the hotel room that evening here are the first shots from the hotel window, I think they are nice and sharp but then it was an Ibis hotel windowOriginally posted by Iansky View PostGreat to hear you have the new camera, did it come with a free bag of spuds or just the grip?
