  • London Triathlon

I'm off to the London Triathlon tomorrow with Brian Mosley's (Alert Bri) Olympus UK Photo Safari Group.

The weather forecast seems pretty poor ATM. I'm thinking E1 rather than E510 (for the weatherproofing) plus 50-200mm and EC14. I'll probably take a monopod just in case, although I'm not a big fan of them.

Any other suggestions / advice? Sporting events are not normally my "thing", but this is too good an opportunity to pass up.

    Re: London Triathlon

    Hugh,

A good point may be just after the transition from bike to run, or within the first couple of km of the run. The facial expressions will be interesting:

Having swum 1.5k and then spent 1hr to 1.5hrs on a bike the athletes will be starting to run on empty ("hitting the wall"). They then have to use their legs in a totally different way and their thighs will have locked up. After a couple of km running they will start to loosen up. However, from experience, the first 2km running really, really hurt.

When I take skiing shots (same object, same speeds) I also tend to use a shorter zoom, say 12-60/14-45. I also plan what I want in advance in little sketches and tick them off as I go, also collecting shots that I plan on the day.

Lastly from me, try http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html which will help plan your apertures.

I guess the last two items are a lesson in egg-sucking but hopefully the first gives you some position pointers.

Thanks Nick - some useful advice there. I'll chuck the 14-54 in the bag as well!

Not having watched this event before, the point about position is particularly helpful.

      Thanks again
