  • Are you a Risk Taker?

When you think the grass will look greener or the falls will look whiter on the other side of a river,
I sometimes ask myself, is it worth risking a nasty fall and gear damage just to get a few pictures.

In such situations are you a risk taker or do you just play safe and shoot the best you can from a viewing platform?

And just for the record, these were all shot by Sandra on her GalaxyS2 smartphone, (which is why this post isn't in FF or LFI)

Under water the rock is covered in algae making crossing it a risky business. Just an inch or two of water, not enough to get wet feet but dangerous.

Like your last shot so it was worth showing us your walking on water technique!

Hope the trip back went as well as the trip for the shot! At least it was worth it when you got there!

This was the trip back, Amanda ... which always feels more perilous than getting across - climbing back over the fence with 'stolen fruit' in the bag one waits for the buckshot. D

In petrified silence Sandra has watched me do many foolhardy things.

Thanks Chevvy, two of the hairiest things I ever did was lie prone on a clifftop with my torso projected out over a 600 foot abyss with a rope around my ankles tied
to a tree for fisheye shots of Cape Hauy and Cape Raoul, Tasmania. As far as I know the shots are unique as no one but me would be stupid enough to pull such an act.

Cape Raoul, XP2 chromogenic film, badly scanned from a negative.

Shooting the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race without a lifeline was even sillier, Stephen. By rights I shouldn't be here!

Taking risks and sensible precautions is part of life, the results explain the need

Look at it this way, if one fell to his death in an act of artistic dedication then he could become a legend, and from the value added sale of his works the loved ones
might live in luxury the rest of their lives. Isn't that better than one lingering on in obscurity until falling off the perch into the quick lime of a pauper's grave?

Woh I feel unsafe just looking at those last two. My risk level threshold is definitely a lot lower than yours Mark. Wouldn't want to risk my camera doing things like that

Mark, I LURVE the Adventurer Spirit in You

If we observe Gymnasts and BMX bike or Ski Hot Doggers - especially in their "Freestyle" the only reason they do it and CAN DO IT is because they BELIEVE in themselves

Henry Ford once said "it does not matter if you believe you can, or you can't - your probably right!"

Here is my most dangerous photo - daggy quick scan

I have been looking for Nicks photos of me, hanging over the crumbly rockface here above Merlins Cave at Tintagel, Cornwall - I had never before seen a waterfall, falling down to the sea as this

My most famous risk was "jumping in" on Cime de Caron, Val Thor; 3 Valleys in front of the cable car we had just ascended on to 3,200m. Skiing down, well jumping and cutting most of the way - down - as the " ... black run was not black enough" ... I do have video of my moments ! MAD and very dangerous - but I was young then ... well 29 I think

ps I have fallen in LURVE a few times in my life, and that pain is far greater than even, my falls off motorbikes and horses
