    Lesson learnt!

    I spent three hours on Saturday out on the Norfolk seashore in temperatures just above freezing. In my hand was my Canon 7D plus long lens but in my bag was my E-M5 plus Leica 14-150mm, Canon 40mm, EC14 and spare batteries etc. Back in the car the bag was loaded into the boot but the Canon kept handy in case of anything showing up on my return to the Hotel (it did). Back in our room I showered, changed and went down for dinner. After a good meal, a couple of glasses of wine and a nightcap I returned to the room and decided to have a gander at today's shots on the E-M5. Opening the bag I found everything was soaked from condensation caused by very cold kit in a waterproof but unsealed bag in a warm room. OK the E-M5 is weatherproof but the lens and other kit isn't, but fortunately no damage seems to have been done - lesson learnt!!

      Oh. I didn't know that would happen, thanks for the story.

      So after cold wet beach walk, take stuff out of bags, right?

        They say you should put the gear in a sealed plastic bag before you take it indoors, then let it warm up. The condensation forms in the outside of the bag.

        Never remembered to do this myself though...
        Look, I'm an old man. I shouldn't be expected to put up with this.

          Maybe the air in your room was loaded with humidity from the shower, which condensed onto the cold camera surfaces?

            Just leave your bag zipped shut for several hours. If you can't wait that long to see your pictures, remove the memory card before going indoors but don't forget that in extreme cases this might be affected by condensation too.

                It's a common problem in Canada in the winter (6 months of the year). There's a few ways of dealing with it. The easiest is to leave equipment in the vehicle, only bringing batteries and memory cards indoors sealed in a zip sealed plastic bag until they warm up. To bring smaller equipment indoors use zip sealed plastic bags, squeezing as much air out as possible before sealing them. I try to use the brand name bags as the plastic's thicker and they're stronger than cheap ones.

                For larger/more equipment I use a Pelican case but any sealable container would work. Whatever method you use make sure you give the equipment time to warm up before unsealing the bag/case.
                It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

                  Also a good idea to buy Silica Gel bags/ tubs and keep them in your gear bags.
                  The refills for Home Dehumidifiers and pill containers make great tubs. Just drill a couple of holes in the top.
                  The picture tells the story, great when you have a bad memory.DW.
