  • Bloomin' Videos!

I have just been watching a recital on BBC4 by the Chinese piano virtuoso Lang Lang and very good it was too. The thing which surprised me, though, was all the people in the audience who were holding cameras and phones above their heads to video it.

I would expect this at an AC/DC or Stone Roses concert but it looked somewhat out of place to me at a classical recital. I would be hopping mad if someone was holding a phone up in front of me while I was trying to watch the artist performing and the long shots from behind the audience were peppered with illuminated screens.

The real irony is that I was watching a beautifully filmed recording with excellent sound. Somehow I don't think their efforts will be as good but I suppose they are just something to post on Twitter and Facebook to say "I was there".

I suppose I am just being a miserable old sod but I was rather taken back by it. Anyway the concert was excellent and Lang Lang's performance was amazing, if somewhat flamboyant and camp.

I was under the impression that most venues ban camera/video during performance?

Most venues do try to ban recording equipment but they can't take everyones phones of them. I've seen people with dSLRs they've managed to sneak in.
It's the image that's important, not the tools used to make it.

The concert took place at the Roundhouse, which seems to be very much focused on young people. I suppose this means that they have to go along with the current trend of people videoing everything as they experience it.

Having said that, the Terms and Conditions of the Roundhouse state 'Audio and video recording equipment is not allowed in performance areas. At one point the camera recording the event actually zoomed right in on the screen of a phone, which was making a video. Most odd. I suppose it depends on what they class as audio and video recording equipment.

However, today I feel more sanguine about it and realise that I need to move with the times and not get upset by the inevitable changes which are happening ever more frequently these days.
