Thanks for the heads up Mark, I'm slightly relieved to see that the lovely looking larger tablet is an RT device rather than Android.
Reason being, I've (well my better half has) just invested in the wonderfully capable Galaxy Note 10.1 for my Christmas pressy
No doubt it will be superseded my an even more capable Samsung unit in double time but I have to say they are putting out some great kit at the moment.

I use the original Galaxy Note and I'm a big fan. Thankfully, the Note II doesn't have anything that I desperately need over the original Note; Jelly Bean is coming for the original Note too.

Huw - I can't say that I am enthusiastic about RT. After buying my first pc(was it 15yrs ago???) I regretted not going Mac. At the time I was concerned about software availability. The only Windows O/S I liked was XP. My laptop runs Win7 that for me contains many irritants, for example its minimalist interface and invisible dialog boxes, and often an extra click to do the same job. Presumably Win8 introduces more complexities to the computing experience.

That sums it up. Do we really need all these innovations that we are continuously being bombarded with. I am getting too old to keep pace with all this, Ian.
Cliff - Samsung I read has developed an even 'smaller than small' mini chipset.
A quad core processor with 4 processors running at 1.2GHz and another quad core processor with another Four cores running at 1.8 GHz each.
Totally insane !! But what an ego trip for the user.

I'm not sure what benefits are conferred by these new devices being launched on the marketplace only nano seconds apart. The hype seems to be all about increased performance.

A few weeks back I replaced my 1990 Nissan Pintara with a one owner, 1989 Nissan Pulsar in almost mint condition which, given the 110kmph highway speed limit and traffic congestion, gets me there as quick as a C-350 Berlin Taxi. I rest my case !

To a degree I agree with you Mark, that's why I'm getting an Android device
I do find Windows 7 to a be pretty good, didn't like Vista but XP was OK. I wont bother with the previous MS history, Win95 in particular was a right pain.

My first pc ran Win95 (over 15yrs ago ! ), fortunately I never had Vista but some of my mates did. XP came along after I had two or three other O/Ss and I actually still run it on a desktop machine. It is surprising how many government institutions here, still run XP.

To return to topic this thread follows some homework, looking for a compact camera to replace the ill conceived PENS that I wasted $,$$$ on, and it struck me that a tablet with a good camera might not only replace the m43 but also my Samsung S2 which I foolishly allowed my insistent dealer to update, which irreversibly corrupted the Navigation app.

So, for a 'hip pocket' camera/computer, Samsung's Note II might just fill the bill although for a guy like me I'm sure it is hopelessly over featured, but nowadays that applies to pretty well everything digital, including my microwave oven and breadmaking machine.

The new Note actually has a slightly large but slightly lower resolution screen (1280x800 v,s, 1280x720) and I don't think it is better in any other way, its appearance is slightly more rounded and sculpted but at a glance they look the same and mine is protected by a flip case most of the time. The new Note I think has NFC, which would be nice but NFC applications, especially here in the UK, are still rare. LTE (4G) data I think is supported but options here in the UK for 4G are limited to one network and only in selected city centres, and it's expensive, so I won't be looking to use that until my next phone which will probably be a Note III The new Note has faster quad core processor and more RAM but I don't feel the need for more power with my Mk1 Note. It boils down the fact I'd certainly not say no to a new Note but my current one still wows me 7 months on from new

Whereas, in my youthful and middle ages, I devoured the TECH SPECS now I am not in the least interested ... until I want to buy something ... then I have to research and translate all the tii ...

I am in my old age now and can happily let alll "this tii" pass me by

A positive vote for Samsung, the hardware hasn't been a problem. People complain about the plastic rear shell, yes it flexes a little but it isn't a problem. And I haven't dropped my Note 10.1 (yet), the Girlfriend's iPad is showing battle scarrs where the "protective case" decided it wanted to have a flying lesson instead of doing its main purpose in life when it had a trip down the stairs. No dents on the thing but it is battered.

I love the S-pen it really is an impressive bit of kit, that in my opinion lifts the note 10.1 one step above all other current tablets on the market.
And contrary to many reviews I would also say the note 10.1 is solidly built to a high standard and it certainly doesn't want for anything performance wise.

Sadly mine is now packed away until that day in December but I can certainly see that I will likely end up using it much more than my desktop

Today I visited our local hi-fi store to check out Note I as Note II I was told is not on the shelves in Oz. Unfortunately the store didn't have a demo Mk1 to play with, the sales guy showed me instead a demo 10.1 tab, functionally the same he said but wasn't able to say whether it has an upgraded 12MP camera over the Mk1's 8MP. It has Navigon, the one essential app that I need and other features I like including the S pen . I would hope that Mk2 doesn't come with NFC as it isn't a feature I would be likely to use and carries a security risk, especially if you lose the phone enabling a finder to steal your ID, as I understand. Nevertheless, on your Mk1 experience echoed by our local electronics technician who waved his in my face and said it's a WOW I will be buying the N7105 Galaxy Note-II 4G LTE as soon as it becomes available here.

Aside from the extravagance I think a 10.1 in place of a desktop would make the perfect companion for the Note II ... there are no pocket$ in $hrouds, they say !
