Both Oly and Panny make lines of "tough" point and shoots, but if I remember correctly the Panny line was considerably less expensive (especially used) and on the main got better reviews than Oly. Sorry but i don't remember specific model designations.

My 8 yr old middle grandson I gave an E-1 and a few lenses
and Nicks eldest grandaugher has a E-510 as the younger too now
They do learn to respect camera kit quite young and are very quick to learn - we also gave3 them Tom Ang Digital Photography and his Master Class books that has kept them busy with a project a week and lots of ideas and technical knowledge
