  • Portable Digital Voice Recorder

Can anyone recommend a pocketable digital voice recorder? There seems to be a plethora of units available. From googling it appears that Olympus and Sony are the best manufacturers of these units but each has numerous models. They also appear with differing prefixes ie Olympus have VN, WS, LS, DS and DP prefixes. I need one that will work with Dragon Naturally Speaking software for transcription.

I need it for my son who is going to Uni. He has dyslexia and struggles with note taking in a lecture environment. At school/college he's had the support of support staff and the provision of written notes but I don't think that will be as easy in a lecture hall of maybe a couple of hundred students.

    Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

I use an Olympus model at work Jamie. I will have a look tomorrow at model number etc and try and find out if it is compatible with the Dragon package you mentioned.

On their website it lists Olympus DS series recorders only, as well as other companies

My son is also dyslexic & had an Oly voice recorder whilst at uni.

I'm pretty sure its kicking around the house somewhere. If we can find it and it works, its yours.

Said son (now senior design engineer working on the next generation Nuclear Subs ) will be home this weekend so I need to check with him first.

In the meantime PM me with your postal address.

Windows 7 is equipped with a very capable voice recognition/dictation system as standard - something Microsoft don't shout about for some reason.

                Homer,
That's really kind of you. My son and I have been working on Dragon Naturally Speaking software to allow him to use this. A number of the Sony/Olympus latest generation voice recorders come with a version of this and are specifically designed to interface to it. I think he'd like to go down that route if we can get one that is recommended. I really cannot thank you enough for the offer though. Can I ask if your son made good use of the recorder in lectures? It's good to hear of other people with dyslexia that have achieved their goals - only too often I've heard stories of people that have really been put off education by the response of teachers/lecturers.
Thanks again for the offer - I really appreciated it.
